So what you're trying to say is that you don't like both the 3E and 4E Rangers, then?

Do 4th Ed rangers have access to low level druid spells?

I didn't even think the druid had been released for 4th Ed yet?

I have never thought the ranger should have spell-casting, since their druid and magic-user spell days of 1st Ed.

Given that 4e has fairly tightly focused classes, and 4e multiclassing is pretty much for dabbling, not trying to create an even split, it seems to me that we can have a lot of classes without it being problematic. And I've almost always liked toying around with new base classes.

Having said that, I picked other on the poll because the basic premise isn't accurate. We'll see an artificer on D&DI next month, and I won't be at all surprised if new base classes are a fairly common feature there.

I didn't vote. I want classes to be playtested, but I'd also like them as soon as possible. And on top of that, I understand the need to not release everything in one massive info-dump at the beginning of the game's life cycle.

Also, we're not getting a martial controller.

Is that a fact?

Not that I would be bothered, as I said, due to the contrived nature of such a thing.
I'm not stating that as a fact or as someone with insider knowledge.

Had you been paying attention to the tone of my voice, my expression, and my inflection as I said that, obviously you'd have known my intent. :)

I just think there are too many problems in the way of designing a martial controller. Martial character with controller bits? Not a problem, we already have several. But a straight up martial controller? I'm highly skeptical. There are ways to create hybrids, sure. Like maybe... maybe a hexblade, who's role is really defender, but who has controller-type curses and fear effects? Or even a ki-fireball throwing martial artist (I'm big tent, and welcome the DBZ fans even if I probably wouldn't play the class). These are all characters who could do controller things while also fighting in melee, but I think they're going to have to add something other than martial prowess to character to justify giving it sufficient controller powers to actually call it an Official Controller, rather than a dabbler.

-Bard = Arcane Controller

*SNIP*

I seem to remember hearing that the bard will be an arcane leader although I can't remember where I heard it. It would certainly make sense given their past vibe of buffing and spot-healing. I have a "defenders of the spiral tower" party concept with all arcane characters coming to mind..

-Damn, once again foiled by text!

-Totally agree.
