I seem to remember hearing that the bard will be an arcane leader although I can't remember where I heard it.
WotC_Miko said the Bard was an arcane leader here.

I've got all the info I can find on upcoming classes compiled here, with sources.

I want more classes whether through supplements or the DDI; I'm pretty stoked for the swordmage and the artificer (even if it is not a complete version of the class). However, my continued desire for more classes is contingent on how well they are designed, and can probably be satisified by additional powers, paragon paths, feats, and epic destiniues.

I'd like to see them published in DDI after basic playtesting, and fully-done versions in PH2 next summer. If significant changes turn out to be needed along the way, those should be published online as soon as possible too.

If they start doing this, I'll second-guess my plan to not pay for DDI.

I was already going to buy the FRPG anyway, so Swordmage is a very nice bonus there. I was also already planning to support Necro and pick up their Player's Guide. More to support a good company than from any "OMG I NEED A DRUID!!" urge ;) I'll happily use it in our game if it's done well. If it isn't, I'll pick mercilessly on Ari and feel better I suppose heh.

Whatever possibility there was for me to convert my game to 4e went out the door when they decided not to supply me with a sorcerer, barbarian and bard. Since those are in my game, and I refuse to stop a campaign that I love for the new edition, any conversion I do to 4th edition will have to wait until I have those classes.

I for one am glad that they changed most classes around, omitted some and added others. I think they chose simpler classes that define the roles and let us learn the rules and test them out. The other classes (hybrids all, msot likely) can wait.

Yes, I am willing to not second guess WOTC at every turn.

Many sorcerer concepts are fairly easily served by the warlock class. Arguably in many cases, better. In fact (see recent post in 4E house rules forum for more) I think warlock probably would have just been named sorcerer, if the 3.5E warlock class experiment hadn't been published in a hardcover.

Bard is harder, although some bards might be warlords multiclassed into wizards.

Barbarian is mostly a matter of flavor. Make 'em out of fighters, rangers, or rogues, depending on what you're aiming for.

Wizards of the Coast has all but said that we won't get any more classes except the swordmage (probably arcane defender) until Player's Handbook II.

Are you willing to wait that long?

Yes. I would rather have well-playtested classes. The 8 in the PHB are more than enough for me for now.

The lack of a Martial character to fill the Controller role is a serious hindrance to playing a low magic game (for example an all martial game).

As they have stated you do not need every role covered in a party, don't worry about it

In my ongoing (3 years) Planescape campaign, we have already converted (and played) the characters to 4th Ed, 1 Defender (fighter) and 2 Strikers (rogue and warlock), and it's working our just beautifully.
