None of the above: I'll more than likely switch when the campaign after this one concludes; likely sometime in mid- to late-2009.

Why will I switch? Just based on what I've heard, because D&D will have a somewhat better rules system closer to what I'd like to see in an RPG. Most of the rough spots of 3/3.5 will be smoothed out. I have no investment in D&D's 'history' or 'legacy', so those changes either do not bother me or won't be used by me in either their old or new form anyway.

I may or may not switch, there's really one major hurtle that will decide whether or not I adopt 4e. I know from 4e news that the races will be expressed as racial ability trees spread across the course of several levels. Since my campaigns almost never use any of the standard races there absolutely has to be a set of guidelines so I can create new races or recreate the existing races of my homebrew in a balanced way. Because if non-standard races are too difficult or substandard compared to standard races I might as well just stick with 3e.

The 4th option.

Heh.

Oh. . . why? Hm. Mostly for reasons best left unstated. It will suffice, I think, to say that I disagree with some of the design philosophies that have been adopted and applied with something somewhat akin to zeal.

There definitely needs to be an option for "When my group starts playing a 4E campaign."
i.e. when a new campaign starts that uses the 4E rules.

Other. I'll probably buy the books the moment they're out, but I don't know if I'll actually play them for a while. Maybe I'll wait for Pathfinder.

My "I don't know if I will" is mostly because I'm not the regular DM of my group, I'd much rather play 3.5 than not play at all or look for a new group, and I don't know what everyone's reaction to the final version of 4e will be.

My guess is that we'll probably switch in the first campaign that starts after 4e. I may run Keep on the Shadowfell as a 1-shot test case, or join a 4e PBP game before that. But it's certainly possible that there will be things that are deal-breakers for me and the rest of my group. I don't think there will be; even if we have just as many (different) gripes with 4e than we did with 3.5, we'd probably flip just to keep current. And I've got a lot of hope for mechanics moving in a direction I like.
