How to get to 50th level?

Are there epic-level programs?

So, since we are on the discussion of epic level campaigns. Are there any programs out there that:

1. Generates NPCs and monsters up to epic level?
2. Allows advancement for monsters into epic levels via HD or class level progression?

Thanks!

What is the highest level that characters can gain in D&D?

What's the Point ? the game usually becomes unplayable around 14th level, because all the challenges have a "deja vu" look by that time. 3rd ed is better on that count than the previous ones, but you have a problem getting serious plots for the adventures.

High levels is difficult

I would not like to take characters beyond the 10th level for the sake of balance. But if you have a good DM and an epic story, going to epic character levels can be fun.
If I was DM of a high level group I would let the players travel the planes to get rid of some evil organisation that is spread over multiple planes, with high level fiends as enemies.

But the most important point is to keep the game challenging. Players always have 'tricks' to deal with certain circumstances, and as a DM you should try to avoid situations that have easily been delt with before, but when the characters get to level 20 or higher, the chance that something has been encountered before is quite big.

Well, to find out how high you can go, we just need to know the CR of the most powerful thing in the multiverse (probably a god) and then use the XP tables to see when they're too high to gain any XP from eliminating it :D

...so what is the highest CR creature and/or god out there?

Hmm... I don't quite understand what you are talking about. In my opinion the game becomes very interresting at this point (14 th level), the characters gain 'real' power and with that powerfull enemys. They gain skill and wisdom and different means with wich they can provide for them selves and others. Playing epic games is just another 'level' of D&D, and just as fun. I my opinion characters can achive as many levels as monsters can be found, It's just a question about time and staying alive. Isn't this the beauty about the game: That it never has to end?

I've found that I don't really care for high-level play all that much. We're all 12th level now and thinking about restarting--there's only so many "save or die" encounters I can stomach before I start to get bored or frustrated.

If that kind of thing is your bag, though, then just take a little trip to that spelljammer world where the Tarrasques come from. IIRC, the one in the MM is just a baby. :)
