How To Raise A Rust Monster Mount Guide

One could buy a Ritual of Awakening, which would increase its intelligence to 4. The creature would then be considered a Magical Beast, and would have lots of flavorful options open to it.

I'm not familiar with a Ritual of Awakening (Kinda fuzzy on rituals in general), can you point me to a source I can read up on?

SRD:Awaken - D&D Wiki

This spell only affects animals and trees, but it is a single spell with a permanent effect.
That is the easiest method, but there are also lower level "Rituals" that give 1d6 Int, and almost nothing else. I think in Savage Species or one of the Monster Manuals.
One could also use a range of methods to give the Rust thing +1 Int. A single point increase to a single ability score isn't something that should be a problem to work around.

With all due respect to Dandu 's stories (Fistbeard Beardfist & Devil Dogs), which are my second favorite takeaway from ENWorld since I joined, this Rust Monster mount guide is still my favorite. I am constantly on the lookout for Rust Monsters in the hope of catching a baby!

Thank you very much! This was my first post and what brought me to ENworld. I frequented rpg.net and found it was becoming increasingly 4e. Someone there suggested I come here to get 3.x specific feedback and so I brought my guide here!

This has been a labor of love for me, and I'm always looking for more things to flesh it out.

It doesn't quite meet with the creative detail of Devil Dogs, however.

The guide is built around acquiring a Rust Monster wand. Just innocently ask you DM, "Hey, while we're in town, can I buy an item for my character? it's something small, just 160gp. Just rounding out my gear."

Than laugh maniacally when he/she says yes, unwittingly unleashing the Power that is to come!!

Than you have to keep the babies super cute for as long as possible, so everyone gets attached!
