How to stop a Grappling Monk?

Comparing the net game effects of Stunning Fist vs. Improved Grapple, who wants to take a guess what percentage of v.3.5 monks take the former?

<shrug> I certainly wouldn't know which way this poll would go, but my monk took Stunning Fist as the bonus 1st level feat and then used his remaining feat choice to take Improved Grapple.

And he can't wait to take Weakening Touch (CW) (Stunning Fist prerequisite) at 6th level.

I don't understand why one grappling monk is so dangerous. My monk is a dwarf with 17 Strength, and he doesn't grapple all that often. Being denied Dex bonu to AC against attackers not grappling you can really hurt - especially if they are rogues. I tend not to grapple with multiple opponents nearby..

I keep getting challenged to Ftr20 vs Mnk20 duels because my gaming group thinks Monks are too powerful. I always win.

Fire shield.
Polymorphed dragons.
Halflings with maxed out Escape Artist.
Stunning fist (you can use this while grappling).
Wights.
Incorporeal opponents.
Sudden Maximized Fireballs.

This hasn't been mentioned yet? For lower levels where the monk has no protection against sneak attacks such as blur: Rogue buddies standing next to the spellcaster?

Two full attack actions by swashbuckling TWF rogues or fighter rogues even with somelevels less than the party will keep any monk away. Or he'll only do it once.

Uh i don't understand?? Besides the damage, does the wounding armor spikes have any other game effect?

Melee:
- armor spikes
- spiked gauntlet
- any other light weapon ... you could just punch the monk ... no AoO's from your opponent in a grapple.

Arcane's:
- dimension door and other teleportations get you free
- freedom of movement makes you immune

To make grappling really fun. Take a monk. Get poison immunity. Bathe in deadly contact poison before fighting. Laugh :)

I saw a 3.0 grappler who was really causing our GM at the time problems. It was all fine until he grappled the BBEG's bodyguard - hadn't realised the guy was a disguised vampire...

To sum up the fight: Grapple. Slam. Slam. Slam. Slam. Bite. Whimper.

Here is a very simple and easily anti grapple item and/or spell.

Freedom of movement.

Wear a ring
or cast the spell

mr grapple monk will be crying about how useless he has just become.

4 Slams? Guess you didn't use the ruling about one level draining attack per round :D

But yes, it's a nice surprise for monky-boy.
