How would YOU change Shadowdark?

I don't get why this is so hard for people.

Is it a PC? It cannot see in the dark.

Is it an NPC aligned with the PCs? It cannot see in the dark.

Is it an NPC enemy or otherwise not aligned with the PCs? It can see in the dark.

If an NPC monster switches sides and aligns with the PCs it suddenly loses it's ability to see in the dark.

Just like in the old days.

This is how I ran it. "The Shadowdark" is an actual mystical thing and makes evil creatures see in the dark.

I personally don't see the need to create a definition/rule like that. Especially since "evil" isn't a defined thing in Shadowdark, and I don't distinguish between Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic in terms of who can see in the dark. Darkness is just darkness, and some creatures can see in it. I can't think offhand of an example that I've used, but I see no reason that a deva-like bastion of goodytwoshoesness wouldn't be able to see in the dark.
