How would you do 3.5e in 160 pages?

Hmm... legitimately CR'd protomonsters plus a few options... "add rend and regen, it's a troll! Add nothing, put a club in its hand, it's an ogre."

Eeeenteresting.

If you cut down the number of classes I would go with sorcerer over wizard, same basic flavor and character niche, simpler mechanics, simpler for playing at the tabletop, and uses less space in the book as you don't deal with spellbooks.

Just to add my two cents to this of what I think Wizards actually will (and won't) include:

First of all, I don't think this is quite what everyone is thinking. It's not going to be the "one book you can bring to the table and use" - the description says it's a compendium of all rule supplements and errata. Think Spell Compendium and Magic Item Compendium.

I surely hope they don't include monsters, spells, and equipment in this. The Spell Compendium and PHB covers spells pretty well. Every monster manual is (in essence) a "Monster Compendium" - and equipment is covered fairly well already, without being too scattered around, especially with the new Magic Item Compendium.

I think this will probably be a compilation of all rules and rule supplements they've ever included in all of their books. For example: Skills - there are skill uses in tons of books aside from just the PHB, but no one knows them (or rarely uses them) because who wants to go look all of that up? Well, now here will be a quick and easy reference to all of the uses of every skill.

Combat will probably be similar, as well as any other rules. Those are all simply core game rules. I even kind of doubt classes will be in there, though I would see them before monsters and spells and items. But I doubt it.

This won't be a compact rule guide, though. It will be a rule compendium. All current rules in one place.

I know, I know... some of the discussion is on what people would like to see in this... :) But this is what I'm figuring it will actually be.

Prophet2b, per my OP, I'm well aware that the book won't be 3.5 in 160 pages. I don't think anybody here thinks it will be; I'm just thinking about what the product I'd want to buy would look like.

Hmm... Take Prestige Classes, Planes, Magic Items, Monsters, and Spells out of the core SRD and as-is it's 248 pages.

That leaves:
3 Basics
9 Carrying and Exploration
14 Classes II
15 Abilities and Conditions
15 Classes I
13 Combat I
14 Combat II
4 Description
21 Equipment
19 Feats
5 Improving Monsters
2 Legal
13 MagicOverview
3 Monster Feats
4 NPC Classes
3 Races
15 Skills 1
15 Skills 2
2 Special Materials
12 Traps
5 Treasure
16 Types, Subtypes, Abilities
26 Wilderness and Environment

1 Page. Take out the table, replace with the 2 formulas that recreate it. Take out wordy crap about abilities and it ends up actually being .75 of a page.

Classes goes down to those numbers just by making it 2 columns as opposed to 1. It could be even more compact by fixing the tables.

Monsters I'm up to Aboleth, Aboleth Mage, Achaierai, Allip on one page, and can probably fit 2-3 more.

I don't know If I'll be able to get it down to 160 for everything but as a single volume I'm curious how many pages it will end up as.

But I'm really keen on not cutting anything at this point and just seeing how small it gets. Although Aboleth is rather depressing because its abilities are rather unique.

I'm working on the text of the Skills chapter, I'll post it here later. So far I've trimmed 3 pages by combining the 2 skills docs into 1, and removing duplicate text (all that crap about what +2/+2 feats and racial modifiers that are associated with each skill).

Interesting number. 489

Number of pages the full SRD minus Divine and Epic stuff with...
8pt font, 0.5'' margins, 3 column layout. I think thats what I'm going to work with. See what I can get that down to.

Edit: Down from 1200ish pages I forgot to mention :)
