How would you prep as a 14th level party to storm the bbeg castle?

Toras -

1) they know the location as far as depthis concerned from previous "visions" caused by the spellfire link oce PC and the children have. They know it is in the lower chambers of the Mountain. The BBEG only needs the spellfire for the cermonies so instant acess is seldom needed. His power base from reports is a mixture of humans/humaniods/demons/devils. It is known/suspected that the players have carved a fair nitch out of their "manpower", at least the ones that can fight. Some damage has been done to their information gathering ability and none to their support capability.

2) The villians sanctum is unkonw at this time. Though some recent information imparted to one player this week may give them someidea (don't wnat to spoil the players fun of revealing it themselves)

3) I think at the time they plan to start the ceremony and seal off any passages directly to the Gate and accept their isn't much they can do about air borne attacks. Accept fight them.

4) some nasty useful ideas.

5) they don't know how to make gunpowder but there are plenty of fantasy equivalents.

6) that may yet happen.

7) hopefully they will keep that in mind.

8 or so) they thought about blocking the area outside but are afraid due to the delicate and experimental nature of the ceremony that any anti-magic/walls of force may disrupt the procedures.

PS : one of the Pc's now knows who the BBEg is and waht his name is. Once he reveals this more about the organizations motives will be become clear.

Whiskers
1) Minions so far are Demons/Devils/Human/Humaniods

2) They actually have a safe place even more difficult to get into than the Volcano fortress. I try not to be unfear in what the players have access to.

3) It requires at least one PC and several others that don't have to be PC's but it is an issue of who they trust to teach the ceremony. So far they have been betrayed a few times and are careful of others but not to an unhealthparanoid level. No reason that he players no of that the BBEG will know when the ceremony starts but the ceremony takes place on his front porch, so to speak. They idea of faking the ceremony still leaves them with the fact that what if he doesn't detect it for a while then they wasted 2 hours (ceremony length) that could have been spent closing the gate. Also spliting forces may or may not be wise. they don't know the level of opposition yet. An ambush works fine if they can defeat the BBEG what if they can't then the jig is up with no chance of surprise wheich t hey have now, or so they think.

4) the children may have to be sacrificed for the greater good. Some characters accept this others do not. But a point made by oneplayer is that without the children the BBEG is shut down. While he hunst for the children may be the distraction needed to perfrom the ceremony. Since they won't need the gate until they recover the kids.

thanks again for the ideas. the players appreciate as well I'm sure.

Voadam - All good ideas.

the walls will be useful though there are many exits some the players will probably learn about others they won't. they may be able to circumvent some of the walls and such. Which takes time but as you said anything may make that difference.

Ambushes will be important since anyone that escapes to raise the alarm will doom the whole project.

Could you, Control Weather - Snow storm, then cast Wall of Ice - Hemisphere over the alter and do your ceremony to your hearts content.

Maybe ;)

and on a side note

The reason theplayers have a lack of knowledge is becuase for Meta-game reasons (3 of the 6 orginal players may not be there in 2 months) we accelerated the plot. It was intended the players make various assualts on the volcano and gather information over 3-4 months of weekly gamingnot squezing huge amounts in 2-3 sessions which is what has happened. Hopefully after sunday they will have enough knowledge and plans to lay out more direct lines of questions on tactics. This is one reason I have been trying to be helpful in this thread is to mitigate the fact the normally would have months to think of a brilliant plan.

It's actually really kewl that you are letting them ask for help in this fashion... It's really the world against you now. ;)

Thanks Mike Br

I like the players being able to do things like this. For those that think that it stretches realism that the characters can access this group mind of the boards I usually say that with characters with int and wisdom in the mid 20's it is hard to be as bright and wise as the characters. I use the boards to simulate these guys have fought a dragon or two, demons and other seriously nasty things we can't even comprehend so why can't they get the combined experience and intellectthat is the community to help reflect the knowledge skills inherent in their characters. To me it is almost cruel and mean not to.

I dislike Gm's who say that no other player can help a player becuase "Your characters not there" if the Player wants help I let the players help then determine if they are using ideas/information they wouldn't have. My players are honest and admit that sometimes some one gives them a great idea but no way the chr=aracter would have thought of it. I'm lucky that way.

That's an excellent way of thinking!

Unfortunately (maybe, or maybe not?), I am the only one of either of my groups that uses these boards at all... though I suspect some of lurking...

Talked to another player in the group today on the phone and he informed me of some well needed information. One thing is my Wind Rider got the sword he wanted. A +1 Holy (Evil Outsider)Bane Greatsword. I will be the bane to all Evil Outsiders until they kill me or take away my sword. Don't know if the Dm wants me to reveal any of the new information yet, but it's some good stuff.

I love the stoneshape, decanter of endless water idea. That would so rock. We may not be able to cap them in and drown them, because their may be some lava in the area, but we could use the decanter to cause a lot of steam/smokestick effect and use Fire Eyes to see through it.

I don't care if you reveal it I just didn't want to tell everyone. I think most of it will onoly be significant to one other player who post here.

Well it turns out that the bbeg is a demon prince of lloth (spelling?) Her son is trying to do all this bad stuff. Seeing as how she used to be a demon she is not totally bound by not talking about the ritual stuff. Also she has grown fond of being a godlike now and worshipped and doesn't really want the world turned back into a demon infested pile of dung. The demon prince (bbeg) isn't at the volcano all the time so it possible to hit the place while he is away and get the children out. He does frequent the place every other week or so on Sundays I believe (go figure) when he does so he bathes and must stay for the whole day. Probably bathes in the lava, so fire damage is probably not to effective. We have also gained knowledge that they posses the crown and sceptor of melan and these items help with spellfire somewhat. We may be able to get them back and put them to use although they may not be super important at the time.
