How would you price this ring?

In Complete Adventurer, there is a feat called Jack of All Trades that basically allows the PC to act as if he has at least 1/2 rank in all skills. The benefit here is that the player can use skills that normally cannot be used untrained. I would like to add a magic ring to my game that confers the same benefit. Always "on", no command word--basically, if you are wearing it, it is just like you have the feat.

But... I have absolutely no idea how much a ring like this should cost. Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks for the help,

Vig

The 3.0 Arms and Equipment Guide suggests any magical item that grants a feat should cost around 10,000 gp, plus 5,000 gp per pre-requisite. An item that grants Improved Initiative (no pre-reqs) would cost 10,000, while one that grants a feat like Rapid Shot (pre-reqs Dex 13 and Point Blank Shot) would have a price of 20,000 gp.

25k gp, IMHO. It's not all that powerful.

I'd require that you wear it for 24 hours before it starts to help you, though. The loss of a ring slot is the real price. :)

Pricing Depends On Campaign

The true value of this ring will vary with how you use skills in your campaign. If skills, especially the ones you cannot use untrained, come up on a regular basis, this ring is worth more. If you don't use skill much, then this ring becomes a little less valuable.

My first thought for your description would be to price it about 20K. That would put it on a par with some of the other powerful rings in my campaign -- and since I use skills a lot, it is fairly powerful. For a low-skill-use game, I'd suggest more like 10K.

Of course, some of what you have to think about is how well will the player(s) use a ring like this? If you have creative players, you need to be careful about pricing flexible magic items like this.

Also, someone suggested that you should have to wear the ring for a full day to get use of it. I think that is a great idea because otherwise it can be passed around the party so that they could all use it in dealing with a single encounter.

I'd say at least 20K or higher, with a mandatory time (like a day or week) wearing the item for it to "attune" to the wearer. I think this would make it at least a medium magic item, if not a major magic item.

I think the key thing about the feat is that it allows you to attempt a skill check for any skill, whether it allows untrained use or not. It's a "cost preventative" item, IMHO, like a ring of sustenance, though instead of costing you money for food & drink, it saves you from spending skill points in skills (whether at class or cross-class rates) that you may not put points into otherwise.

Maybe 10k, it is not all that strong of an ability.
I agree; I might even allow it cheaper. I would add the "one day to attune to wearer" bit, though, to avoid passing the thing around. (But then, I'd probably add something similar to all magic items, if I were a D&D designer.) Whomever observed that the loss of a ring-slot was an additional serious cost of the item is absolutely right.

I would say pretty high, 20K+ sounds right.
I my group that would be fought over tooth and nail to have and as others have said an attune time to keep any abuse down.
