Yeah, what do they have in common except...

Funny thing is, I don't have a concrete answer to that. I've just always associated the two. They didn't write during the same time frame, and there are plenty of other writers who are more similar to one or the other than they are to each other. But, still... *shrug* I always think of them as linked in some fashion. Wish I could say why.

It could probably be because Elric and Conan, who are Moorcock and Howard's most well-known characters, are basically polar opposites of each other; Conan is a mighty-thewed barbarian who eventually becomes king by his own hand. Elric is a skinny, sickly, albino prince whose kingdom is handed to him on a silver platter. Conan is a man of action, while Elric spends a lot of time brooding over his choices. Conan relies on his own skills and abilities, while Elric is drug-addicted and relies on a powerful magical sword.

In fact, Moorcock designed Elric to be the anti-Conan, IIRC.

I definitely prefer Moorcock. Harder and harder. That's right. Gimme Moorcock... err... wait a sec...

(blushes)

That aside, I'm definitely more of an Elric guy than a Conan guy. As I'm a skinny, decadent drug-popping spoiled angsty upper middle class goth chaos mage, he just appeals to me more for some reason. Go figure.

And The Dancers At the End of Time was awesome... highly recommended.
