Howler origin?

Did the Howler originate in 3e? Where else besides the MM is there information on these creatures, any edition would be fine for background info.

AFAIK the Howler comes from the 2e Planescape Planes of Chaos Boxed set monstrous supplement.

A rather large number of the monsters in the MMs are from Planescape, or from prior planar sources. I wager much of this has to do with summoning spells.

Maybe the creature was inspired by an over-nocturnal neighbourhood dog..

And damn if the Howler's entry in the PS books wasn't creepy, seriously good stuff.

Though I'll admit to liking the 3e picture of them a bit better
