Yes! I asked sorry to WAR 'cause I erased the dragon's ugly nose spike.
*slaps forehead* Haven't noticed that. But I'm not bothered by the nose spike, in fact, I've developed a certain liking for it. But I've used that picture as desktop background for almost 3 months, so I got used to nose spiked green dragons! :heh:

Cheers, LT.

I have to admit. . . I do prefer the green dragon PHB cover. . . despite the lack of slutty pornstar makeup.

That cover for me really gets back to the essence of D&D, the new one doesn't.

I think its mostly Nostalgia. I don't think its a very good cover (no offense). I would take it in a second over the 4e cover though. I do very much like the logo of the wizard at the bottom right conner though.
I love the 1e cover, but I think that something like it would be a bit too hard-edged for WotC. They wouldn't use an evil idol unless it looked cartoony and they'd never put bloody corpses on the cover!

I would give up my first born for a cover this this good. It just reeks of Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta.
I'd love to see them do the 4e covers!

Its probably been done, but here is what I would have picked

When I think d&d i think of the 80s even though I started playing when 3.5 already came out. These are the kind of covers I want to see.

I don't mind the other two but the DMG dragon with earrings in both ears is a sign of decadency. I just really hope they're saying it's a female dragon and not trying to go the direction of Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20.

Dragons don't need to put unnecessary holes in their bodies, that's what adventurers are for!

Well, I'm a fan of those pictures themselves, but I don't think they're appropriate for D&D themselves.

It lacks magic effects and magical creatures from D&D-fantasy. And although Red Sonja looks sexy, she's just one of those silly-dressed (THE ONE, actually) chainmail-bikini-girls, which I'll never ever take serious.

Those pictures would be good for a Conan-RPG, but not for D&D, because it lacks D&D-things. At least, the way I see it.

As for the actual topic itself, alas, the D&D 4th edition PHB-cover is already decided, and both times, they've been dissapointing. I sure hope that the PHB II will have a better picture, perhaps even another illustrator.

what can I say, I'm infatuated with that sort of slightly realistic gritty fantasy feel that exaggerates reality for cinematic effects.

I dunno. Am I old? would this drive 14 year olds away from d&d or inspire them?

my first experience with rpgs was dragon quest on the nes and hero quest the board game. For some reason this kind of art just does it for me.

Well, the second picture with Red Sonja, with more armour (like, the entire body, if possible), and a Dragonborn thingie (but one that's not as ugly as that one we have now), and perhaps some griphon steed, that would make it awesome and D&D-ish...
