Hunger of Hadar and Tendrils of Thuban

Neither of these powers state that if you sustain them the zone persists. Does this mean they simply stay around for one round, and the second round you get the secondary attack if you sustain it? We haven't been playing that way but now that I read it, it looks like that is the case. Thoughts?

Note that in both instances, the sustain effect references the zone.

Hunger of Hadar: "Secondary Target: Each creature in the zone"

Tendrils of Thuban: "Make a[n]... attack against all targets within the zone"

If the zone didn't stick around, the targets wouldn't be within anything, and wouldn't be legal targets.

See I saw that quote in the sustain section, but I question why, then, Stinking Cloud has the "The zone persists" in its sustain minor entry. I mean these warlock powers look pretty crappy if they cannot be sustained in this manner so I agree with the interpretations here.

Is the entry for Stinking cloud (and similar other abilities) just superfluous then?

Zone means that, by definition, the effect continues for the entire duration of the spell.
That part we get.
What, exactly, is the duration of the spell?
Well, 'sustain' means that the spell has a 'sustained duration' which means the spell's effect lasts for as many rounds as you continue to spend the suspend action indicated, or five minutes (whichever is shorter). There is a sustain listing, therefore, by definition, the duration of the spell is for as long as you take sustain actions.

The zone effects, therefore, must last as long as the sustained duration lasts.

The zone descriptor means the effect continues for the full duration of the spell? I don't recall reading that, but I might have missed it. In that case that explains it, though it does make the whole Sustain X: The Zone Persists line pretty unnecessary (though as stated above Sustain X: nothing would be a tad odd).
