Hunter?

I'm a huge White Wolf (and WoD..specifically nWoD) fan. That little bit laid down, I don't feel good about HtV. I can't put my finger on it, but I guess I wanted...something else.

I didn't like the oWoD version of Hunter either, though.

What else is there?

Old hunter is mortals who get supper powers to fight evil nasties.

New Hunter is mortals with no powers that go out and fight evil nasties.

I'm not a fan of old hunter and I'm still not sure of new hunter. I'll wait till I read the book. I think though the mortal game is perfect for hunters and Hunter will really have to offer something that game doesn't to impress me.

The organizations all leave me cold. Hunters can get powers, but they take the form of stuff that in several cases doesn't seem like it fits in my view of the WoD. I don't like that they're, essentially, one-trick ponies and that sessions will probably boil down to monster-of-the-week type scenarios. In the case of crossovers (which are much easier to do in the nWoD of course), they don't feel like a good fit.

I don't know how I'd do 'em differently, exactly, but I don't like what I've seen of them so far.

Monster of the week worked well for Buffy for almost a decade. X-Files, too. And Supernatural is chugging along nicely.

Might the core concept be the issue, not the execution?

I'm not sure how I missed that the first read-through, but I think you might have hit the nail on the head for me. I think that's possibly what's irking me about it. It just hasn't impressed me.

The one positive note I'm keeping about it all is WW has done well with the other lines. All the games I've played have played a lot better then they read. So, I'm still a little optimistic about Hunter. I'm really hoping the demo just failed to capture the game.

I enjoyed the Hunters Hunted material and the Year of the Hunter stuff for the older old WoD games, but wasn't impressed with the actual Hunter RPG they put out for the old WoD.

I'm interested to see how they handle it this time around. I've been VERY happy with the re-invisionings they've given the other aspects of the World of Darkness.

Thanks for all the great responses. I've been skimming the pdfs and checking out the sight. nWoD has a significant shift in tone, and I'm not sure if I'll like the one for HtV. I liked CtD and CtL, even though they are very different feeling games. HtR was the first oWoD game I actually ran, so I'm attached to Hunters. And like everyone has said, I thought the mortals (and then second sight) stuff covered the idea of Hunters nicely. I was going to try and run a Hunter-style game w/ nWoD and those materials until one of my players (back in March, maybe?) asked me if I knew about it. Pretty much deflated my storytelling mojo. Anyway, thanks again for the responses. Totally need more WoD on ENW. Oh, and Shadowrun.
