Hunting down a Rog/Clr(travel) (New:We got 'im!)

Nail

First Post
If yer Videssian (my DM), stay out! Players can plan secretly too, y'know. :)

He gone? Good.

Last session our party was "ambushed" while sleeping (Read: pick-pocketed in the woods) by an invisible rogue. We have low Spot and Listen skills, so it's not hard, I'm afraid. :heh:

While my Clr and a our Ftr were on night watch, he snuck up behind the Ftr and stole a magic item. Fortunately, his silence spell alerted us that something was up, so I ran out of the radius and cast Summon Monster V: Large Monstrous Scorpion. Its tremorsense led us to the invisible bad guy, ...until he cast fly. No contact with ground = no tremorsense.

A round later I summoned some Dire Bats to track him down (the silence spell was gone). They did, but couldn't hit the invisible rogue due to high AC.

Our wizard tried an area Dispel Magic next, with no success. I also tried an area dispel (we couldn't see him to target him), but only got a higher level spell (that pesky fly), rather than the invisibility Arrg!

Our Ftr and Rog could do nothing. Our Sor/Clr had activated his goggles of See Invisibilty, so he targeted the Bad Guy with a magic missile.....which was absorbed. The bad guy had shield up. Double aarrrrggg!!!

The bad guy attacked my dire bat with an AoO, so he became visible,....we surrounded him.........so he whipped out a Scroll of Teleportation and got away. Triple aarrg!!

My question: How can we find this guy, and once we do, what strategies/spells could we use to neutralize him and get our stuff back?

Our party:
Clr 9 (sun, luck)
Ftr 9 (sword 'n board)
Rog 8 (Spot skill +5!)
Wiz 9 (necromancy)
Sor 7/Clr 1 ("blaster")
Drd 8 (missing that meeting)

The Bad Guy Rogue (an educated guess):
Rog 5 / Clr 5(travel, magic) / Wiz 1
AC: at least 23, but casts shield
Atk: Rapier (not a big deal)
Items: Ring of invisibility
Dex boosting item +4
Other stuff (he's liable to be heavily munchkinized)
I suspect the DM is using PC (66,000 gp), rather than
NPC (21,000gp), wealth guidelines.

Help!

Scrying

Scrying is your best option, given the information that you have. Divination might give you some useful information to either track him down or assist in scrying him.

Also, another good option would be to track him. Not where he went, but where he came from before burglarizing you.

If you think he's coming back anytime soon maybe a locate object since he seems to have one of your items now. Divination spells like Scying are definately the way to go however. Wondering what makes you think he's a cleric though. He could simply be (if your guess on the total character levels if correct) Rog3/Wiz7-8 or Sorcerer7-8 with even som of those levels traded back for Arcane Trickster. Might want to sort that out before you chase him down since Arcane Trickster gives him additional sneak attack dice if i remember it right. If he's got enough levels in Wiz stuff he doesn't need a ring of invisibility cause he can possibly cast up to Improved Invis. and if he's a Sorc he can do this repeatedly. Good luck in catching this guy either way and let us know what works and did not on this thread or put it as a part 2 thread. :D

Duh! Of course, why didn't I think of that?! I actually thought it was much higher level.

Given my level, that's 760 ft for 9 minutes....I'm not sure how I'll use it, though. He's *probably* teleported to a large city (Dyvers, in case yer inetrested). If that's the case, I'll have to get close enough before I can use this....and hope he still has the magic item.

Scrying is not possible right now: no holy water font, and only a very little bit of free cash left.

He's a cleric. I know because: My Large Monstrous Scorpion grappled him, but he got away because of some spell-like power. After some fiendish cackles out of the DM, he admitted that's what it was: the Travel domain power. Also, he cast fly and dimension door, and they are on the travel domain spell list.

We know he had a fail chance to use that scroll of teleportation, so he's not a high level wizard......I'm guessing his other domain power is Magic, to help with the scroll casting use......but I could be wrong.

How can I find him without Scry? And how can I catch him once I've found him?

No ranger = no tracking, as well as no decent Spot skill. :(
What could I do with Divination?

He doesn't need the Wizard level, he can cast Shield from a scroll or with a wand. Teleport is on the Travel domain list, so he can use a divine scroll (probably specifically written for him) or just UMD it.

Oh, and if he cast Dimension Door, he's probably 7th level Cleric.

Anyways, if you want to catch him.
Buff up (don't forget to boost initiative), Scry, Teleport, win initiative ;), Dimensional Anchor / Trip (since Grapple won't work too well) + Silence.

Standard tactic, but quite successful. ;)

Other options to find him, unless he's in your vincinity, could be Commune or Contact other Planes.

Bye

Doesn't hurt to try out Web with Silence either. Then hit your Dimensional Anchor as backup and work him over with Invisibilty Purge. Then go to town. Web may not work cause of his Reflex saves but it's so low level of a spell it's worth a try. If he has Cleric levels in a god of travel and he's evil try searching the nearest city and use some of them people skills one of you should have to gather info on him.

Right, Thanee: Web won't work because of the clerical domain power.

However: Could one of you read over that Travel Domain power? 'Cause I'm no longer sure it protects against grapples. Read it carefully, and let me know what you think.
