Hunting down a Rog/Clr(travel) (New:We got 'im!)

Finally, before the BIR could react, I cast Summon Monster V: a Celestial Brown Bear! And, of course, it used its Improved Grab ability when it hit him. One grappled BIR, coming right up!

Next the BIR got to react.

Sounds like a rules snafu there. A Summon Monster spell takes one full round to cast, so even though you began before the BIR, he would have got to go before you completed the spell and the bear appeared.

Congrats!

Yeah, what Shilsen said about the full-round spells, but hey, there's no going back now ;)

I prefer Charm Person when questioning, following the theory that if you're a close friend, you'll give information freely. The questionee might stay silent in a Zone of Truth, and Detect Thoughts only turns up surface thoughts. All depends on your DM's interpretation of the spells, and what he wants to give away, of course.

Cheers!

Already covered... Nail proposed a feat that would turn summoning time from a full-round action to a standard-action.. which I accepted (and the session before that gave him enough XPs for 9th, so he earned a new feat). Alas, the potential reasoning behind this didn't quite enter my planning.. oh well!

Heh, must hatch nefarious plot for next session in two weeks!! :)

Shilsen: Oh, thou of little faith! ;)

I have a feat chain plus PrC that takes care of that little "One round casting time for Summon Monster spells" problem.

Although it's mucho dangeroso to tip yer hand to th' DM this early (we game again in two weeks), here's my plan:

We'll need to wait a day to prepare all of these good questioning spells. I'll see if I can't get all of that Zone of Truth + Detect Thoughts goodness happening, while I'm hoping Teiran (Wiz9) can scare up some Charm Person stuff. To be honest, I'm not sure he's got the spell.

Our questioning will center around two points:
  • Who hired him, and
  • What's at the place the BIR was trying to lure is to.

For those of you that might find this interesting:
On the BIR we found three interesting items: A letter, a metal plaque(sp?), and a black metal box with an Orcus symbol.

The letter was written by BIR, and apparently was to be placed in our keep, after he had stolen some of our items. The letter told us that we would find our items in a cave about a week's travel away.

The plaque and box were to be given to the creature within said cave by BIR, along with our stolen items, presumably. We don't know what's in the box, but the plaque says: "Your snacks should be along shortly to retrieve their items. Don't open the box until they get here."....or some such nonsense. To be honest, I forget what the silly thing says; Finger's player has the notes and such.

Any suggestions? :)

Fortunately, being the DM, I do have this info at hand :)

Here's the note:
---------------

Dear Victims:

You have all been most unfortunate to fall under the displeasure of my employer.

A poor choice on your part, as you will discover once you have searched through your belongings.
You will find yourselves missing a few things of value to you. If you want them back, follow the map you see below, and in the deepest part you will find a sack tied together with a symbol of the sun.

You should be aware that I have been instructed to leave these valuables intact, and your rogue can attest to my honor.

My employer instructs me to tell you that he will derive great pleasure and satisfaction in your futile struggles, as you head to your doom in a feeble attempt to recover your possessions. Should you choose to be cowardly, be assured that less satisfying but far more lethal and direct methods exist to handle your demise.

He laughs that by my hand he has had you at his mercy and yet spared you, only to watch you die, slowly, later.

Do not delay too long. If this lure does not suffice, I hate to think what actions might be taken by his dwarvishness.

And a personal note: I am pleased to see that you are proving to be worthy adversaries. I had figured that this would be an easy contract, and I am pleased that I was wrong. Do, however, have that female ape of yours cleaned. I could smell her before I even entered the clearing last time.

Cordially Yours,
Valathas Quickhand

and here's the plaque:
---------------------

A gift. Snacks to follow.

I humbly request that you be content for now to open the smaller gift in the pouch, as the box has a nasty sting. Better to wait to open that gift, for snacks come hunting it, and they may not choose to come if it has been tampered with.

oh hey...a thought just occured to me as I was reading that:

Was the box meant to hold our stolen belongings?

Yup. A nod or head shake is all that is required. Besides, we've been treatin' him alright.
