Hurl ideas for details about my new character at me!

So you would avoid comedy by going for cliche?

It seemed Midnight wanted him to be more debonair than the average half-orc, thus the disdain for things that are barbaric.

I would rather have the dignified cliche than the comic cliche. Going against the grain is as much if not more of a cliche.

Using primitive instruments does not make one barbaric. His purpose may be to show other cultures the simple beauty of a well told tale.

I know the Doc personally....maybe he would like the comic slant, but maybe he'd like to try something different for a change.

He should embrace his half-orcishness and use an appropriate instrument:
  • one of those funky aborigine pipes (the name escapes me)

A didgeridoo? Hmm..interesting idea.

I think next time I play a bard I'm going to use a big ol' moonshine jug with three x's on the front. Nothing inspires compentence like a ho-down.

- Silver Tusk-Caps

- Forget the Harp and Lyre. Have him carry a full-size harpsichord (having a +2 STR helps in some cases!)

- Make him a complete physical coward. His battle cry: "Not the Face!"

- Make him a compulsive skirt-chaser. Tailor some appropriate pickup lines (like: "I may be half-orc, but I'm *all* man!")

Look, you can play the gentleman and milk that "He's a gentleman....but he's half an orc! How novel is that? Reverse stereotype is teh comedy gold, roffle!" thing for all you like...

Uh... I was actually trying for the old gag of "Half-orc bard? How novel is that?" but adding the gentleman twist. It didn't occur to me at all that people do the orc gentleman thing for "comedy gold" at all... though it doesn't surprise me. You've misinterpreted my intentions.

Oh well. Played him last night, he was fun, but extremely weak. He's a Bard 7 Virtuoso 2 with a Lute of the Winds (MoF, page 161). He's more there for my roleplaying fun than to aid the party in times of gnashey teeth.

Anything else, like name, background, instrument, etc- I haven't a clue just yet. Hit me with some suggestions.

Keith Richards. He talks with a British accent. He plays an electric guitar.

I'm not very helpful, I know.

He uses a guitar, slung low accross his back, dresses in black, a long weather coat, he shows a lot of chest and arms (think Tear on Adromoda). He sings rousing songs, campaign music but his ballids tease at the hearts of the fair.

Make his preferred instrument an accordian.

He wears a cape, and one of those jester hats.

Talks only in questions, or better yet he doesn't talk at all and mimes his actions.

He plays an orc double guitar.

Uses a lasso as a preferred weapon. His seconadary weapon is a trident.

g!

If I were to do a "half-orc bard gentleman" I'd do it one of a few ways:
  • Raised amongst humans with nothing orkish at all about his behavior or demeanor. In fact, he'd look pretty human with just a bit of an exotic twist to him, rather than obviously "orkish" (illustrations of 3e orcs are pretty cartoony to me anyway -- I'd go for something more along the lines of Claudio Pozas orcs.) Make him depressed a lot, and perhaps "victimized" -- he always thinks he's getting shafted because of his race, even when he's actually treated fairly and like anyone else. Set him up for a glorious death sometime in the future to get all that angst off his chest.
  • Make him an orkish wannabe gentleman. He tries, but he just hasn't figured out exactly what being a gentleman is all about, so he bungles it spectacularly at times, often getting the party into unnecessary and silly fights while he's at it, perhaps.
  • Despite the comments above, I've played two female half-orcs in the past, and really enjoy it. Then again, mine were relatively tough-talking rangers. Anyway, playing a female character is fun: I do it about 50% of the time. To say that males playing females is insulting and cartoonish is ridiculous. Play with some folks that actually know a few females or two for a change.
