Hurricane preparedness info

When we lived in Key West we would take 2 liter soda bottles, fill them with water up to the top of the label, where the curve starts, and freeze them. Filling them more risks the bottle bursting.

If power goes out a couple in the main part of a fridge can keep it cool for an extra couple of days. The water will be cool for a while after it melts and in the summer without power it will be great to drink.

Well I am getting ready to head out of here and drive to a friends place in College Station. It looks like the storm is coming straight at Houston and Galveston now and even as far north as I am, the winds are going to be too crazy to even think about. My boss called me an hour ago and told me to skip work and to call Monday and see how things are.

Now I get to go fight the evacuation routes. This is crazy. On one of the freeways, it is taking 11 (no, I didn't accidentally hit the 1 key twice, that is an eleven) hours to move approximately 30 miles. Cell phone service is intermitent with the services being overloaded, and gas is getting hard to find everywhere. I am glad that I filled up the truck yesterday.

Even in College Station, they are predicting that the storm is going to be at least a Category 1 Hurricane.

Good luck to everyone else dealing with this storm. Stay safe. With that, I am outta here! See you guys in a few days!

Bah, leave me alone will you? ;)

Be safe guys.

I've got a friend who is in the cancer center in Houston, and they can't evacuate due to his condition. This is what his wife had to say last night:
The hospital will go on lockdown tomorrow evening at seven. There won't be much staff and the staff that does stay has to camp out in the hallways. We don't know if any doctors will stay. We were told today that the hospital has flood gates and generators... so hopefully, we are in a safe place. But already the coffee and gift shops have closed up and many of the staff have fled.
I hope for their sake, for you guys in the path, and for everyone elses, this storm avoids the densly populated areas as much as possible.

My wife is stuck there.

She was helping out her Mom and the plan was for her to fly out tonight. But the roads are completely jammed and some of them are being closed. All the gas stations are out of gas. If she made a break for the airport there's a good chance she'd be stuck on the road, so she's taking her chances and staying.

I would appriciate if if this storm dropped down in size.

Its really surreal right now where I live. It is really hot, but it looks beautiful outside. At least my whole family is with me right now. :)

There is a sort of anticipation in the air amongst everyone.

When I first saw the track of the hurricane, I thought it was headed straight toward Corpus. I'd recommend to you to head west anyway. Now, though, it looks like it might be hitting land a little more east, and I'm in southwest Houston. Looks like Texas is getting hit hard regardless.

... and I have a test on Friday!

Now it's aimed more for Houston..

At least that's [the test] is one less thing to worry about.... :)

So, why aren't you there?!?!?! You work for the CDC after all....

Edit: So what does your wife do?
my wife also works for the USPHS. she is a medical epidemiologist. triple board... internal medicine, infectious diseases, and preventative medicine. she is in the Commission Corps... a branch of the uniformed services... the Surgeon General is a real General when it comes to the military... the Corps doesn't have enlisted personnel, only officers.
currently she is deployed in relief efforts for Katrina in Dallas. but is shifting focus on Rita now. evacuating patients from hospitals near the coast more inland.

Best of luck to all.

Templetroll: I have an office mate who used to live in Key West. You "conchs" are crazy folk! (And, yes, I mean that in a good way. ;) )
