D&D 5E hypothetical - a giant capturing downed pc's while rest of party fights on? rule for this

Also would the giant pick up the unconscious character as an action or free item interaction? Using grappling rules (with or without automatic failure) would be an action, while treating it like an object wouldn't be.

I would rule it as an action, essentially a grapple but with auto success (no opposed role), or using a static DC if there was some kind of impediment to the giant getting a good grip on the PC.

Item interaction seems to be reserved for things that are meant to be picked up or handled, not a relatively bulky item like a body (even for a giant).

I guess that, in my games, I don't assume PCs with the actual "Unconcious" status are technically/medically unconsious. In my games I often just describe them as wounded and out of the fight. So for me, letting them roll feels okay. YMMV

So true. Personally I'd let the Giant pick up the player as a free interaction, unless the PC was too large but with a giant that is probably not the case. So the giant could pick up the PC, move, then use the PC as an improvised weapon against his comrades. Splat.

And a lot of people like to roll for the right reason :) Which is debated at every table in existence at some point. So it is not shocking that the forum is no different.

If a DM wants something to happen in the game, then it is not too hard to stack the deck against the players. I would just prefer the DM planned it, gave me a chance (however small), and then move on. It is up to the DM to decide how much he or she wants to create on the fly and whether the table finds it acceptable.

can anyone point out if/where this a rule where if a pc is downed during combat that they could be captured and dragged away by an enemy while other characters are still fighting

Six pages already - I've not read them, so apologies if this has already been covered. Picking up the PC should be interacting with an object, just like a PC picking up something. But it should provoke a reaction / AoO from any PC in range.

Just to extend the idea, imagine an invisible rogue throwing a large Bag of Holding or Portable Hole over a PC...
