Hypothetical: If DnD had never existed, BUT...

This thread scares me. It made me do an RPG chronology for myself. The early years go something like this:

1977 - 7th grade - D&D
1978 - 8th grade - D&D, Top Secret, Gamaworld
1979 - HS Frosh - D&D, Gamaworld, Top Secret, Boot Hill, Metamorphosis Alpha
1980 - HS Soph - D&D, TFT, Call of Cthulhu, Traveller
1981 - HS Junior - Traveller, CoC
1982 - College - Traveller, Champions, CoC
1983 - College - Champions, Justice Inc, Coc
1984 - College - Champions, CoC
1985 - College - Champions, CoC, RuneQuest
1986 - College - Champions, CoC, D&D
1987 - Now - Champions, CoC, Paranoia, Ars Magica, Over the Edge, Big Eyes Small Mouth, and way too many others... oh, and 3e...

To tie it back to the the thread, I guess that if I had not started with a TSR product, then I would have started with Call of Cthulhu and Traveller, but I still would have become a Hero Games freak...

Hm... I'd probably have played a little Fighting Fantasy, from Steve Jackson, and then embarked on developing my own system (which I call Nocturne for various out-of-date reasons). Considering that it's fairly much complete, I'd be running a campaign using that simply to satisfy my ego, although it would be offline right now while I shifted from using exclusively d100s to dice pools in an effort to speed up gameplay.

The Nocturne system handles freeform magic, variable time scales and freeform character creation. It also requires the multiplication of four three-digit numbers for every action. I guess it's a good thing D&D exists.

Me? I would be uber-nerd, friendless, have no aquaintances, never have met anyone worth talking to, and be a general geek. Ironically, DnD gave me a social life.

Now thats saying SOMETHING about my life before DnD . . .  :(

Trust me, it's not as bad as they say it is. At the moment, I prefer 3E. But RM was a pretty fun game for a long time.

I rate it easily higher than "dead in a pool of your own tepid filth".

Yeah. That's what I play now....
