I actually want a 4th edition! [semi-rant]

I have a little problem with the "if you don't like the options, don't use them" argument. The problem is that there are players that demand that they get to play a duskblade/warlock/battledancer or they quit the game.
So let them bloody well quit.

The rules bloat complaint has never really made sense to me.

If you don't want new rules, don't buy books. That's pretty simple. I'm down to about two books a year plus a subscription to Dragon because I have so little interest in new rules. Poof, problem solved.

Indeed, you don't even need to be this extreme. Buy the books you are interested in and just don't use all the ideas.

And really, I think many of these people are just reacting to an overreaction from some DMs. It's one thing to tell your players "I want to limit the feats and prestige class options" and another to tell them "I refuse to consider letting your use of this feat/prestige class you want to use because it's not on my list." Some of these players might agree with the first statement, but are turned off by the insensitivity to their desires of the second statement.

And did they acutally said, there will be no D&D 4e? I have read Abyssal Maw's thread, but didn't find anything like that...

We can be pretty sure, there will be no D&D 4e in 2007, because the production line is almost overcrowded with new products. But what about Xmas 2008 for example? They never ever answered directly... NO, there will be no D&D 4e in 2008.

What does long ways away actually mean? A year? Still in time under the Christmas tree.
What is this "good stuff coming". I might be a bit critical, but since DMG2, I haven't seen any good stuff around, just milking the D&D cashcow...
So for me any good stuff coming might be radical D&D 4e in 2008.

Oh and one more thing. Laughter is often sign of tension... Mark my words. They are hiding something. (Although it might be D20 Modern successor and not D&D 4e itself).

I would have to agree with the earlier poster who said that the complaints of rules bloat dont make a whole lot of sense, at least as far as it applies to splat books.

I can understand complaints of rules bloat concerning the core rules. Plenty of people really just hate Attacks of Opportunity. Grapple should not be as complicated as it is (long sequence of rolls to determine success). Over reliance on bonuses are also a problem, when it gets to a point that the bonuses to damage are 2 or 3 times the range of the base die (consider a Longsword, at 1d8. Now consider a longsword +3 used by a Barbarian with 20 Str who is raging while under the influence of Prayer, Bulls Strength, and has a further +3 bonus from a Bard).

But complaining that there is a glut of feats due to books like the PHB2, Complete <Insert Class Name>, Book of Vile Darkness, Manual of the Planes, and whatever else just strikes me as silly. That much variety only becomes a problem if you compulsively buy every book you get your hands on.

A better complaint in that case is to note how there are too many sub par / useless books coming out.

END COMMUNICATION

That's a player problem though. If a DM doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to say no to the players, he should possibly be looking for a new hobby.

I said no to a player recently. He did leave.

It's a losing fight. The player environment around here is such that I can't afford to be too picky if I still want enough players to play. So I have to compromise.

That's not to say I want a 4th edition. I don't. At least not anytime soon. I'm glad to see increased focus on adventures and miniatures because it interferes with the feel of my campaign less than new splatbooks.

I'm looking forward to a 4E, but for different reasons.

I spent about $150 on 3E.

I spent about $250 on 3.5E.

My investment for, what, 7 years isn't all that great. I've certainly spent more on Pepsi in that time! I just want to see what a new edition can bring to the table.

But at this point, I've been so sick of the way that the game has been heading, that I look forward to throwing everything away and starting from scratch.

You have reached a critical junction in your life as a role-playing gamer. You are about to realize that what Wizards of the Coast or any other company does doesn't matter. Their goal is to make money*, not to nurture a hobby. (They do nurture the hobby, but only to the extent that it makes them money.) There may still be the occasional product that you find helpful to your game, but for the most part you already have everything you need for a lifetime of gaming.

Like so many of life's other changes, the transition may not be pleasant, but there's much joy to be found once you make it through.

Welcome.

Ditto. But first, some expansion material for Book of 9 Swords!
