Shadowlight,

Thanks for the link! Hadn't seen that yet.

It's been forever since I read the novels, but I was most interested to see that Monte's giants are based less on traditional D&D giants and more on those appearing in Steven R. Donaldson's "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant."

Cool. :D

People keep telling me to read Thomas Covenant but I haven't yet. Is it worthwhile?

Shadowlight,

It's been years since I read the Thomas Covenant books (and then I only read the first trilogy), but I definitely enjoyed them. If I had time to read anymore, they'd be high up on my list of books to re-read.

The novels do require a bit of adjustment if you're primarily used to something like the early Dragonlance novels or perhaps Tolkien's works. Covenant is very much a dark antihero sort of character...mean, violent, often cruel to those around him. Definitely not your typical fantasy hero! Still, at the time, I was mostly reading more typical "high fantasy" stuff like Dragonlance and the Shannara books, and Donaldson's works were a really nice change of pace.

Sorry I can't provide more details, but it's been just a little too long...

I only read the first two books, but I couldn't stand them. They are incredibly depressing both in the sense that the main character is a depressed jerk (and that's putting it nicely) and there is little redeeming about having read them.

But, they have been popular to some extent, so obviously not everyone agrees with me.

And as for the releases coming out: roytheodd: I have to say, your expectations on what WotC would release can certainly be called remarkable. I've never known of D&D products throughout it's lifetime to do what you ask. For that matter, I'm not sure I can think of any games at all that did that...

And what did you buy from Wizards this year?

The 2003 products may not interests you, but it may interests others.

Duh - he referred to what he *as an individual* was going to do. Where do people get off thinking that when a person says that he/she is going to do/not do something, it must automatically apply to everyone else?

To avoid a hijack, I plan to buy Races of Faerun, Fiend Folio, and The Unapproachable East (with trepidation, as its the *third* version of this region published: good old WotC + FR = Regurgitation-o-rama!).

I just realized I never said what I was planning on buying (I know that's why you all are coming to this thread :))

Savage Species
Arms & Equipment Guide
maybeRaces of Faerun (depending on how much is portable)
Urban Arcana
Ghostwalk
3 Revised Core books
possiblyDragonlance (again depending on how much is portable).

OK, you can all rest easy now that you know what I plan on buying! (yes, I do spend way too much on RPGs)

My "For sures" are likely Fiend Folio, the FR stuff, and Savage Species.

My "Maybes" are the revised rulebooks (we'll see, my guess is that they'll be much more appropriate for those who have not been keeping up on errata, don't know where to look for resources like the D&D FAQ, etc.), and the Arms & Equipment Guide.

I'll buy Savage Species, probably Races of Faerun, and definately (although maybe not right away) the revised books from WotC. Other than that, I'm more interested in some of the third party stuff that's supposedly coming out soon. And I'm still waiting for that 3e Planescape! :)

*sigh* What did I expect after they fired their creative staff?

Hopefully they're still drawing on quality freelancers, as well as the creative staff they still have on board.

I mean, we have planned 14 D&D/Kalamar products, 20 HackMaster products (not including about 60 miniatures), at least 4 comic lines including a new D&D comic miniseries, plus some secret project stuff I can't mention yet.

And that's with a total staff of 14...

:)

They are not a reprint they are a revision, they are in their thrid reprint now.
Funny, I didn't see the Third Printing. I only have the Second Printing.

Every splat book introduced rules that WotC stated replaced the rules in the core books so you can almost garuntee that those rules will be in the revised core rulebooks.
Well, except for any mentioned errata and clarification (such as the shuriken rules and wildshape), those splatbooks' material are supposed to supplement the core rules, not supersede them. At least that's the impression I got when I read the intro of my Sword and Fist.

Also I hate the layout of the DMG and the chapter on adventuring is far to slim. The rules for playing monster character are almost non-existant and contradictory where they do exist. I can't wait for the revised edition books.
Don't know if they will expand on that chapter though.

As far as the campaign specific stuff, you're right I won't buy that. Probably won't buy much from WotC except the core books because I split my money evenly between WotC and other d20 publishers.

I probably will. I have been a fan of Dragonlance since it came out and been wanting it since TSR made a boneheaded decision (IMHO) to adapt the setting to the defunct card-based SAGA System.

As for other d20 products, I have been picky. Don't buy too many d20 products myself unless it appeals to me, like T20: Traveller. So I really don't have any complaint. If one company can't provide me with something I want, I look toward another company. Plain and simple.

Again, that 's the beauty of the Open-source d20 rules system.
