Ah poohey, Enchantress told me she was posting this thread and I told her I was going to reply the way I did. It's not gloating, it's teasing and done in jest. Second, as far as her charisma is concerned, the party's cleric can cast restore which will bring her charisma back to its original value. The only thing she and the Arcane Archer suffers is a level loss. No big deal. This is just a one shot adventure so we can all experiment with 10th level characters and so that I can run this module and use my black dragon mini. In another campaign Techno is the DM, so in this campaign I asked them to create 10th level pcs that were of a different race or class than what they were used too. I wanted us to explore the options a bit.

We are all enjoying this experience. They seem to like playing this high. We got to use speak with the dead, and the spell that lets the cleric as 1 yes/no question per level to his god. That was fun. Enchantress's character messed up 2 of the 3 trolls they met earlier. I tried to let each of the characters shine before this planned encounter. I do not and did not and will not pull any punches. The game looses its thrill if you know you won't die.

Oh, don't 'poohey' me! I am scarred for life from this traumatic experience! and just for that, YOU'RE paying my therapist bills. Plus the bill for my attorney once I sue you.
P.S. Merry Christmas!:D

Hehehehe, Death is a part of life. You are now ninth level which is the bare minimum for this module. I think I'm going to have to throw more random encounters to toughen you guys up, the final battle is a doosey. So now that you know you can die, does this adventure seem a bit more..... dangerous? When we finish this adventure why don't you try to DM one.

Merry Christmas, see you guys next weekend *evil meniacal laugh*.

Ohhhhh Okay all this is making sense now... those poor adventurers didnt have a chance

Sure they do. It will take good tactics to win. One hint though, when facing a dragon, do not line up... scatter!! I read this part of the module to them so that they could see that I was not out to get them:
Storemere appears in front of the PC's and surprises them. He unleashes his corrupting gaze. In the first round after the surprise round he unleashes his deadly breath weapon and tries to get as many of the PCs as he can.

I think some adventures need to be very deadly, and most adventues should be deadly, and a few adventures not so deadly. I do need to throw more random encounters at them so that some of them will be 11th to 12th level by the end. I'll have to see how things go, don't want people getting bored and all.

Agree - that has been my groups' standard dragonfighting tactic for over a decade now. Spread out, that way only one of you dies a round to his breath weapon :).

And as for the DM gloating - what's the point of killing characters if you can't gloat. IMC, by longstanding tradition if your character dies the DM grabbs your sheet, rips it in half, and tosses it back on the table. If you get raised, you can tape it back :).

"DM, what is best in life?"
"To destroy the PCs, to see their character sheets pile before you, to hear the lamentations of their players."

:D

Ran this one for my group. When one player realized what was going on he actually seemed surprised, and a bit frightened. That was fun.

Enchantress, Sorry for your loss. It really hurts to lose a loved character.

The best part about a character dying is the story that goes along with it. Allow me to share, if you don't mind. My first 3ed death occured with my 7th level Rogue. I went into a room with some "gizmos" in it to see what they did. The Barbarian in the party didn't trust me, so he closed the door after I went in. I was the only one in there. Well, the trap in there, that I didn't bypass, obviously, summoned a fire elemental into the room, between me and the door. I was fried. Didn't have many hit points, and I was already wounded. All in all, it was pretty funny.

So my condolences. May there be many more, with good stories.

Enchantress:

I have lost many character, it's a hard thing. Particularly when it involves a traumatic series of raising and restoration that leave you indebted to the local clergy at a crippling interest rate.

But:

With all the characters I truly put my heart and soul into I have always enjoyed their death as much as their creation.

Bingo: the pyromaniacal halfling thief who died from exploding pine forest wounds...

Plaintieff Attal: the mute but magical guardian who brought the wrath of a wicked man down upon herself by miraculously shouting out a life saving warning to her friends...

The trick is to make it either heroic, vengeful, or majestically futile.

Death is just the flip side of the character creation coin.

I feel so much better now that those words have been said. Anyway, do you think I have enough experience to actually DM a game?
