I DM Standing up

I DM standing up, myself. Our tradition used to be that the DM got the nicest chair, but I kinda broke that when I started taking folding chairs; it takes up less room, and I can get it out of the way when I need to.

As mentioned, it's easier for combats and for action. When doing more intensive RP sessions, I sit down to draw away attention from me and more towards what I am saying.

I stand up during scenes with tension or featuring battle. It seems to heighten the existing tension and urgency for our group.

ditto. the players do too. that way they can say they "died with their boots on." ;)

Interesting. I didn't realize so many DMs stand up!

I do the same, standing for almost every combat. And also for any other times that the characters might be involved with slow/tactical movement around a dungeon via a battlemap (mostly because I like to stay close to the map in order to continually add in little terrain/furnishing details with colored markers as I describe the areas)

I tend to be up and down while DMing, depending on the situation. I'm always standing during combat, and might sit when the players are doing things that don't require me to be quite as involved or when they are discussing tactics, but stand/move around when I am describing things or addressing them as an NPC.

Wow!! I can't believe how many people stand up during games!

Oddly enough, last game I stood up for a little while, but the other players asked me to sit down because it was weirding them out.

I think I'll try to get them used to it - I want to get the other players more actively involved in the game anyways!

I started standing when 3E came out.
I am not sure if it is because of using counters (D&D Mini's Now) or since that is the time I really got back into gaming and just didnt notice I was doing it different now.
Standing seems more comfortable both physically and mentally.
I also seem to be able to think on my feet better ;)

I stand at present, but in the past I've been content if I can get access to a stool that has a little more height than the other chairs.

With 2e it was because I didn't like staring at a DM's shield while running a game.

With 3e, it's because I like being able to keep watch over all the mini's on the table.

Sometimes DM standing up but the reason for doing so varies. It might be just because I've been sitting for too long or have had too much sugar. It might be because we're in a big battle and I need to be able to move around the table to get to miniatures, draw in new terrain or place Dwarven Forge pieces.
