I got my Tact-Tiles and they are the bomb!

I really like mine. My favorite feature is that when you get to the edge of the tile you can erase a previously visited part of the area and place it on the table allowing you to continue moving forward without the need to erase and re-draw the whole map.

I passed on the carrying kit. I have been carrying mine in a leather messenger type bag my wife had and just bought a Dry Erase marker set from the local Staples. So far it is working fine.

How would these things function considering that my group uses a square table 2.5' x 2.5' or so?

I would say better than a regular battlemat, since you can just lay down the tiles you need for that encounter. No need to take up the entire table for a fight at the inn. Plus, you could have certain areas pre-drawn, ready to just lay down on the table. And depending on the number of tiles you have and the areas you are representing, it becomes very easy to account for the party hopping back and forth between areas.

Hmm, great idea for a product. I'm just thinking I could pick up something at Home Depot for $5 that would cover 2x the space as these tiles. May have to stop on the way home and see.

Hmm... that's odd.... our set came with 4 or 5 markers....

We use them alot and seemingly can't do without them now! They're definitely worth the money. Although I agree the cardboard box is wimpy. From what I heard last year, they were wanting to look into a more sturdy carrying container for them. If all else fails, go find an old laptop carrying case and put them in there. The box seems to hold up quite well. Our DM has a set and still has them in the cardboard box and it's held up well so far, as he's had that set for 11 months now.

The box will hold up a lot longer if you use some tough tape (Duct tape or Packing tape) around the three handle holes (two small slots in the box base and one bigger slot in the box top). For five bucks extra, including one black Expo chisel tip, it is well worth the money. And the box will hold 8-10 extra markers or some extra minis and up to 3 extra tiles. I've had my box set since December 2003 and I'm still using the original box.

As far as I know, the box set has always only included one black marker. There is no way they could afford to include 4 markers and the box for just five extra bucks. The markers alone retail for a buck a piece. ;)

Tact-Tiles are the neatest! :D

Check out my review if anyone is looking for some in-game experience.

Yeah, mine only came with one marker. The box is decent and worth the $5 I suppose. If you can spare the extra $5 go for it but it's certainly not the selling point of TT's.

It's not the space that counts, it's the utility of having the tiles cut into 12" x 12" interlocking pieces.

Believe me, as someone who is QUITE willing to kitbash any number of mapping solutions-- and in my day, I tried them all-- the $60 bucks I spent on Tac Tiles was the best $60 I spent on gaming last year.

Perhaps in my entire life. I will use these things forever.

thats cool, and I think they are a very cool idea, but I'd want 4 sets....

In an effort to come up with a cheap solution, I stopped at Staples ands Home Depot today. My Staples buy consisted of 2 12"x12" dry erase tiles for $7, a dry erase marker and a permanant sharpie. Total price $12.

My Hope Depot buy consisted of a 4x8 sheet of white melamine, which the stud at Home Depot was nice enough to cut into 2 4' squares that I could fit in my car. Total price. $12.

Got home abd broke out my ruler ant the permanent marker and put a grid on the tile. I didn't do full likes...just a "+" every inch to mark the corners of the squares. I'm going to let it dry overnight and see if thedry erase marker will erase the permanant marker. I suspect it will.

Also took the melamine over to my shop, put in the plywood cutting blade and chopped it up into 1' squares. 32 squares for $12.

Once I know if the dry erase marker takes off the permanant marker or not, I'm going to try putting a grid on the melamine.

Yes, while they don't interlock, they are the same size as the Tact Tiles at a fraction of the cost.

now....for those who think I'm cheap. I also ordered two molds from hirstarts.com to make plaster dungeon scenery. Grand total for the molds alone was $70 after shipping and handling was figured in. And there will be a lot of work ahead of me when I get the molds.

Will post more on my homemade Dungeon tiles whel I know more.

We finally got tact-tiles in the UK, so I ordered the set with the case.

The first time I brought them to the game, the first battle was on a large bridge. The DM pulled out a bunch of tiles, laid them in a long single-file line on the table, and drew the bridge on them. It was perfect!

Cheers,
Liam
