Well, I should clarify. I don't hate armor, I hate the fact that my character is totally dependent on it. It is the one thing that messes with my enjoyment of the game.
For a long time now, I have longed to play a fighter who is not burdened by armor; I want to play an expert swordsman. The problem is the rules of the game don't support such a concept; if a fighter gets caught without armor, he is as dead as disco. I don't like the fact that a high level fighter who isn't wearing armor can get hit so easily by a low level commoner with a pitchfork.
In addition, the over-reliance on armor encourages all sorts of nonsensical behavior, IMO. The idea of trudging through the wilderness, scaling mountains and creeping through forests in plate mail is silly, yet nothing can be done for it. Being burdened with 60 pounds of metal on a hot summer day makes no sense, but there is little choice; if you get ambushed, you're dead.
A few months ago, our DM was running through the Rise of the Runelords adventure path. It started out at a fair in the town of Sandpoint; all sorts of drinking, fun, and merriment was happening. The day was a hot one, and yet here we were, decked out in plate mail. I felt like a moron for doing it, but my character went inside and took off his armor, because it made little sense to be wearing it in the middle of a peaceful village on a hot summer day. And of course, we were attacked, and I nearly died. OOC, I knew it was coming, but my character didn't see the need; he wasn't a guard or anything, why should I have my heavy armor on during a party?
I hate having to wear armor all the time. I hate the fact that a character cannot defend himself without armor, or some magic item. Most of all, I hate that I can't play a character concept that I've been itching to play for years without having to make some cheezy build requiring 800 classes. Blarg!!
Phew, there, I feel better now. Thanks for reading.
