I hate my gaming group!

Just a rant:

I got back from FLGS tonight after (against my better judgement) trying a session in an ancient Greek themed D&D game -- talk about disaster

A few weeks ago I was DMing for the same group when after a few attempts to change the schedule (work related) they decided to dump me as DM (without wanring I might add)

I decided to forgive the slight and give the game a chance

After assembling the mucho stupid and incoherent party (Dwarf Fire and War Priest, Elf Expert/Time Cleric, Courtesan, Bard (a decent character) Wizard, Son of Hades Ranger (a very annoying character) and a Warlock (me) then listening to a pointless lecture on all the bad stuff the gods would do to us for major blasphemys we started the adventure --

The basic adventure was kind of dul (I don't like starting at level 2) l but I played along.

After an encounter with some crocs (which was fine) the DM decided arbitarily slings don't get strength added, Burning Hands doesn't work as per the rules and to ignore the grapple rules for the PC-- basically he wanted "extend his story" a bit rather than put up with the rules

I could have tolerated this IF he had given us a sheet of changes up front or warned us that ignoring the rules was something he was fond of doing -- I don't know about ya'll here but part of the reason I play D&D is to master the rules and have fun with them -- arbitrary changes just aren't fair or justfied with prior warning --

Secondly I have been chewed out horribly for rules mistakes I have made when I run -- It seems like a double standard which is not acceptable

After this I threw down my dice and left the game -- I don't need this kind of crap frankly -- either wanr me up fron you are playing fast and loose with the rules or play by the book dammit

Why are you playing with these people? I wouldn't.

Then again I wouldn't put my hand into a garbage disposal while it was running either.

The Auld Grump

Actually its one particular player (T) that is mostly the problem at least thats what I think --

I have had 2 (C and E) of the players in my campaign and it was one of the best campaigns I have ever run 6 months of utterly cool gaming

--- (R and S) were in another game and were OK -- J and CW seem alright -- its just T that is the spolier --

well what i am going to do is quit this group and start a new one on Saturday -- oddly E suugested this and he may play in that -- T just won't be invited and it should settle thw troubles I hope -- if not I will give them all the boot

Thanks for letting me rant

If you played with these people before, you probably might have seen this coming - did he want to abuse and twist the rules to unfairly benefit him when he was playing instead of DMing? Chances are, a player that wants to have the world revolve around him will DM the same way. That having been said, as a DM, it is his right to rule zero anything he wants to. It is his right to adjust the rules to fit his desires for shaping the campaign. Either play within the rules the DM sets or go find another group.

Yes, but he should also inform you of any rules changes ahead of time. If you do something and he springs the rule change on you then, that's bad form. And bad DMing.

I don't think he CAN understand that -- His attitude is "I don't let the rules get in the way of having a good time" -- I don't mind that with a 'rules light" game so much -- but I hate it in D&D

I think he is simply power hungry and afraid his players will jack up his campaign -- I can't blame him there -- these players aren't real linear and do follow plots of clues too well -- ah well -- time for a new group

I have played Rolemaster with this guy before with few troubles but not D&D -- as for rule 0 well No -- he can rule 0 stuff but only before play -- otherwise its unfair to the players -- as an an example he rule 0'd crits (only the weapon dice multiply) but he did that up front -- I don't like the rule but it was upfront so I wouldn't complain --

I take the attitude that when you are playing a comprehensive set of rules (like D&D) and you aren't sure what you are supposed to do RTFM -- if you need to make changes put it in writing

Yes, definitely time for a new group. Obviously you are miserable and frustrated playing with them. No need to put up with it. Move along and find/create a group that meshes with your style.
