I hate potions.

Usually it's been pretty good. I had a rogue who after encountering a mysterious group of travellers decided that the Shadowdancer route was for him. So he tracks these people down and petitions to learn their secrets. A test is arranged, and the night before he gets to decide what he can take (having no idea what the test will be); he gets to bring six items with him. Two of the things he takes are a potion of Alter Self and a potion of Cure Light Wounds.

He does well in the trial saves when he rolls a '1', failing a critical acrobatics maneuver. He falls into a wide slick pit which is a 30' cube, unable to climb out, and the pit walls are collapsing in on him. Seconds to go and he'll be buried under tons of earth and suffocate. He drinks the potion of Alter Self, grows wings, and flies free.

Various other trials go on, and he's wounded sorely in them. He drinks the CLW potion, bringing his HP to a mere 15. Then he has to live through a rapier duel with the master thief while dodging all through the ropes and wires and ramps.. when it's all said and done, Raj has 1 HP left and the master thief is unconscious. So, without the potion, he'd have been done for.
