I have a confession to make...

Haven't we had threads like this before? ;)

Yes, I do like combat. Sometimes I feel dirty for it. I could do "so much more", I think. "Maybe with a different group", I think.

But... it is damn fun. I know that if a session has a few combats, I will probably have something to enjoy about it.

I don't think it's such a paradox. As a GM, I'm all over long- and short-term plot, a rich world, well-realized NPCs, and rich interaction between characters, the game world, and NPCs. I love exploring, mysteries, the big reveal, and high drama. Check out my campaign wiki (Magica group) over on the WotC site for just a glimpse of the sort of stuff going on in my main game.

I also love action. For its own sake, and because it's a driver of the drama. It adds spice and gives the game pace, but also gives the other elements a higher level of tension. As much as I love all that other stuff--and I really do--the idea of a campaign without regular action sounds dreadfully boring to me.

...flavor text, flavor text... KICK BUTT!!! ... flavor text, flavor text...

Once a DM denied us combat for too long, so we slaughtered his NPCs. The look on his face was priceless.

So we're using this thread to voice over love of slaughtering our foes before us and shackle their women and children ..... that sort of Conanesque sort of statement????

I see no Stormwind Fallacy. I merely love roleplaying diehard tough-as-nails warrior characters!

Warforged Swordmage!

I am also massively in favour of good Hack.

Good story, brilliant NPC's, exciting locations, mysteries, all that stuff is great but what I love most of all is a hard-won victory over an enemy on the battlefield. Figuring out how to bring them down and doing it is just immensely satisfying.

...I like combat.

Yes, I know I'm the player most likely to play the diplomat, cleric or PC who isn't quite as good in combat as the other players' PCs,

but I really enjoy combat.

Yes, I can happily go through the entire session just roleplaying and making a story,

but I really enjoy combat.

If you ever move to the Chicago area, my gaming group would welcome you with open arms, like a long, lost brother.

;)

I love the battle, too. I think a game is best with a balance of combat and theater, but I could enjoy an entire game session of nothing but combat; I would not enjoy an entire game session of just theater.

Something that always bamboozles me about discussions of classic D&D is how some people claim that the best way to play and succeed at some of the old encounters was to find ways other than fighting the monster to get the loot/goal. The claim that one should try to avoid as much fighting as possible always stuns me.

I got into D&D to fight the monsters, slay the dragons, destroy the orc horde. It was the charge into battle that got my heart pumping, and built my interest in the game. It never dawned on me back in the day to turn every encounter into a puzzle. And it doesn't interest me now to finagle a way around a good combat.

D&D, to me, has always been about the grand, heroic, minor-to-epic battles.

I enjoy a variety of ways to solve problems and often prefer the non-violent solution if it gets the job done.

But sometimes, when a particular NPC has been a thorn in our side and irritated us one too many times...................ENOUGH TALK!
