I don't think that's the case because I can follow the thread of the conversation, it's just that some folks seem to reply without quoting (which gives me reddit vibes, which is why I thought maybe it was due to a threaded view).

Not sure why nobody's bothering to give you a straight answer.

The forum software strips out quotes from people you have ignored as well as people that ignore you, even in replies from unrelated people.

For them their replies look just like they wanted them to.

Not saying this must be the case for you, just that it could be the explanation.

Easiest way to check: log out (or use a different browser) and then visit the thread. Another way is to use the EN World app, a reskinned Tapatalk client that can't understand the Xenforo ignore system. If you now see lots more posts and reply-quotes you have your answer.
