I hope 4.5 isn't called "4.5"

I'd bet the next revision of D&D will be called '5th edition', whether it's a 1e->2e/3e->3.5e-style cleanup and tweak exercise, or an OD&D->1e/2e->3e/3.5e->4e style major update. And won't be out before 2013 at the absolute earliest.

Agreed.

I'm one of the few people that actually wish there would be a 4.5 since I like the idea of releasing the system for a year, letting everyone balance test it, and then making all the fixes. It's not going to happen though. Too many people were angry at 3.5.

D&D 3.0 2000
SW RPG 2000
SW RPG Revised 2002
D&D 3.5 2003
SW Saga Edition, June 2007
D&D 4.0, June 2008

do you see a pattern here ? (avg. 3.5 yrs between "revisions)

maybe if it was done otherwise... like a booklet of changes offered only.

But a part of me - hope, think - WOTC learned much from past edition, and 'naively' think they may work harder this time on typos, testing and all - because this time, it is quite more critical...

Only thing worse than having to replace a book with a new one is having to supplement it with a new one, and refer back and forth between the two to work in changed rules.

If they go with the "PHBX every year" plan, they probably wont need to do a whole scale revision. They will just quietly and with little fanfare introduce optional rules that will eventually become the new standard, while also updating original source material from the Digital Initiative.

Think a 1984 style revision of history. To borrow from 3rd edition to 3.5... "There have always been size categories for weapons. The Haste spell never allowed a caster to cast two spells. Harm allows a saving throw."

If they handle it like that, the only inconvenience will be the growing discrepancy between your hardcopy and the Digital version online. But for your convenience, you can upgrade your PHB1 to the corrected version by purchasing a new copy at Retail.

And before anyone actually jumps on me for trying to be anti-4th edition here, I actually like that way of handling it. As long as the digital version is kept up to date and you can access revised rules even if you have an original printing of a PHB, it should work out just fine.

END COMMUNICATION

One thing I hope comes out of the new edition is the death of this decimal nonsense in edition titles. Let's call 4th edition "4e" instead of "4.0", and when the revision comes out, let's call it "4r" or something, but please, please, PLEASE not "4.5".

That is all.
How about "4e Service Pack 2"? :p :p :p

The game won't be Dungeons & Dragons 4.5...

It will be DunGeons & DraGons 4.1.0.1!

Every time you play, it will check online to see if you've got the latest version, and if you don't, it'll download it for you.
