I hope Eberron is a flop. Am I evil?

dead wants the money-making machine called WotC-MegaCorp to really make a loss on this one.

dead wants them to realise that they've got enough great settings up their Armani shirt sleeves without having to churn out new material.

I don't think those two items work together. If Wizards learns that it can't sell a campaign setting, then the lesson would extend to the old campaign settings that helped tank TSR back in the day, would it not?

However, if Eberron does very well, it will mean more money for the Wizards division of Hasbro, which means more money for Dungeons & Dragons, and in the end more products for d&d players and fans.

I think the WoTC thought process is this.

Old settings failed. Outside of the Forgotten Realms all of the others were failures sales wise. Better to try something new than rehash an older setting.

Spelljammer was reprinted and updated in Dungeon. So was Dark Sun.

Planescape was a problem because it was the "core" and it ties into the core world, so it's doubtful there is a setting. The Planescape feel polarized a lot of people who disliked the tone.

GH: A mess. Thanks to EGG's fallout, the setting was put thru the proverbial blender, at one point just being a dying "joke" immediately after. Greyhawk is such a mess and the fans so factionalized that nobody IMO could ever bring it back without pissing off some portion of the fan base.

Good news! There's no strict alignment rules in Eberron, so you're covered!

PS I agree with you about Spelljammer and Planescape. Mystara is something I'd want to do the conversions myself though. I'm a huge admirer of Monte Cook's but I thought his take on Galantri was his weakest work. If Monte Cook doesn't meet my expectations, I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with anyone else.

Greyhawk -- if GH is gonna be the *default* setting, then I think it should get support just like FR -- otherwise make FR the default setting! A recent poll on EN World showed us the GH is just as popular as FR. I don't know, maybe there's just a lot of old-school folk on EN World.

One of the things that makes GH popular is that it is generic and undetailed. It gives alot of freedom to the DM. Even if it is as popular as FR, publishing more stuff on it wouldn't help that. And I think GH is the LAST thing WotC needs to put more into.

More likely Chaotic Neutral.

I hope Eberron does reasonably well. I just do not want it to become the "standard" or "default" DnD setting.

(And it would be nice if WotC actually produced a decent medieval fantasy setting for once -- or just provided more support for Greyhawk, which appears to be the closest to such a setting they seem willing to go.)

I don't think it was so much that the old settings failed. The lesson they learned was: beyond a certain point, the more supplements/support you provide for a setting, the less profit as sales decline. So it makes sense for them to "get in and get out". However, there may be exceptions (FR is certainly one) -- and they're probably hoping that Eberron is another.

Odd, my Monster Manual says, "usually Chaotic Evil." ;)

While that would work if we were using GURPS, Pendragon, or HarnMaster, I have sincere doubts that 3.5 +splatbook-style D&D models anything remotely like traditional fantasy.

If anything D&D only models itself well, making Eberron inevitable.

Maybe just desperate to generate interest in your thread, by making provocative statements.

Frankly, I hope that WotC will make huge benefits in selling Eberron, so they don't get the urge to quickly release D&D 4.0 (Hey! I just bought my 3.5 set!)

I have no problem with them making millions of dollars (which I doubt frankly) in selling Eberron. I would be glad to know how many Eberron copies were sold, and to compare: how many D&D sets, and how many FR basic book.

I Guess I'll take the bait; I like Eberron, though the name is a bit lamn, it reminds me of a comic book called Battle Chasers and I always wanted to play/ GM in such a world, I was just to lazy to create it my self. I'm really lazy! Anyway, I hope this one is a blockbuster!.
