I just did something I never though I would do

der_kluge, I know we've only met once, but I'm going to ask you to reconsider at least picking up the PHB.

That statement may surprise some who have seen some of my other postings re:4Ed and know I don't like it much.

I think 4Ed is a decent game, and I might like playing it- but I don't think its a worthy successor to the 3.X mantle.

There are, however, some good things in the books that you might like to yoink as an experienced DM.

It would also be a good thing to have the 4Ed PHB just in case you get asked to join a 4Ed game.

Danny, my current RL group has no intentions of switching. If we decide to play something more than a casual one-shot, I would definitely pick up the PHB for myself. Otherwise, I'm not going to bother with it. Honestly, I could see myself playing C&C before I played 4th edition.

re: lack of GSL support as a turnoff.

Most of my campaign setting is based on 3rd party support. Wilderlands with a number of 3rd party options including a number of products like Book of Templates, Blight Magic from MEG, Tome of Horrors, yadda yadda.

None of which is WoTC. In fact, I'm already a HORRIBLE WoTC customer. In 3rd edition land, I pretty much own core books, the 4 main splat books, and very little else. Most of my support goes towards much more imaginative and creative 3rd party stuff.

If that support isn't there, and I'm betting it won't be, I'd rather hedge my bets on Pathfinder.
