I actually think that they have already solved 2e's problem of "too many settings creating competing product lines" and they could get away with producing setting books for all their settings.

The differences are:
  • The default setting is "the Multiverse"
  • They are an art house (people would buy them for the art)
  • They are a story house (people would buy them for the story)
  • The market is a very different place.
  • TSR was making other foolish mistakes at the time that all those settings failed.

I had an idea while reading the arguments on the Hiding/Stealth thread which makes me want to ask @DavyGreenwind:

Can you share what it says in the chapter that describes skills and what they do regarding the Stealth Skill?
From what I've been able to see, the skills section is literally condensed down to a single table with each skill having a single line. For Stealth, it just says that you most often use Dexterity with it and that it's used for moving silently and hiding behind things.

Actually, alignment gets more attention! I was surprised. There are tables for characteristics based on alignment.
This looks like an attempt to replace campaign-specific story descriptors like bonds/flaws and the like, with ability-based descriptors. It's not the same thing, but it is a thought-jogger for how to portray your character.

I never liked putting evil alignment options in the 2014 PH backgrounds, making it seem like they were valid suggestions or valid random results.

I've seen that page, yeah. I thought that there might have been more, but I'm not all that surprised. I know some folks will be dismayed, but I think it depends on what's in the DMG.

There apparently is a new Barbarian subclass, a World Tree Barbarian, who has a feature that increases their reach significantly. What is the fiction attached to this feature?

@DavyGreenwind following up on this, does the skill section (or perhaps exploration or social encounters) call out that the DM may ask for a check based on what the player describes their character as doing, even if they didn't take one of the explicit actions called out? Or conversely, does the Actions section mention anything about DMs calling for ability checks based on other things that the PC might do?

What I'm trying to get at is, does the PHB make it clear that if you as a player say "I want to sneak past the guards" that the DM may ask for a Dexterity (Stealth) check and will have set a DC for how difficult that is to acomplish.
