I just learned the meaning of pain

In tonight's game my knight did his job as a defender so well he was pummeled for over 80 damage spread out through our encounter with orcs. That was like 200% time my Hit Points. I spent 4 healing surges and eventually was left dying while the party fought on. Failed 2 death saves even. Pummeled with a capital P. :)

I guess there are consequences to charging into a mass of orcs, huh?

On the upside I did a ridiculous amount of damage with all my opportunity attacks and managed to save an ally's "life" by killing an enemy before it could drop him. I like the knight class!

Sounds like a great time (well except for the being on the sidelines at the end part)! In the paragon game I run I'm often amazed at the amount of damage the defenders (especially the paladin) can take without really being in danger of going down. Its good to see defenders who understand their role. :)

You almost sound like the guy in our group playing the un-missable Dwarf Fighter. The DM's dice must HATE him- despite having the highest AC, he is also among the most frequently hit...

My dice hate the paladin in my game I think. He's in the best possible armor, and I still seem to hit him all the time, and seem to crit him more often than anyone else. The poor fellow is always running low on surges. I think last encounter, I ran him out of 3 of his 4 lay on hands, all used on himself.

Our DM was rolling really...extreme, I think he rolled 4 criticals and 5 natural 1s. Ironically none of the criticals were on my PC. The half-Orc went down soon after me. It's telling that the group let me bleed out to almost dead while they healed the half-Orc back quick - they must consider my knight more of a pain in the ass than the half-Orc ;)

I seriously hope I don't become someone's story about "that guy" whose PC was the group fall guy.

I remember a fight with Orcs when the parties Paladin took on a huge pack of orcs, while the rest of the party dealt with the rest of the encounter, 4 healing/inspiring words and three? Lay on hands on himself. He was unconcious repeatadly through out that fight as the orcs felled him, and then he healed up. Eventually he went in Undying warrior at epic...

Edit: He ended up sub bloodied, he went through 10 healing surges in one encounter. I reckon more that 130hp out of 62

Taking double hit points in one fight really does not seem that much to me. My groups routinely take a pounding.

I guess it is a different playstyle, but then again, my group uses non-standard 4E ruels, so some differences should be expected.

He was unconcious repeatadly through out that fight as the orcs felled him, and then he healed up.

How did he survive being KOed in combat surrounded by foes? Why didn't anyone stab him in the eye while he was down?

Or did he have allies nearby to prevent that kind of thing?

In a recent session the group busted into a room and had a major fight going. When the enemy counter-attack came in, the Warden stood in the doorway and stoned the entire line of enemies coming in. The Assassin stood behind him with a reach attack, the ranger stood behind the assassin, and the 3 of them beat the tar out every monster I threw at them. The warden took more than 200 hp (at 5th level) before the fight ended.

He felt pretty epic.
