How did he survive being KOed in combat surrounded by foes? Why didn't anyone stab him in the eye while he was down?

Or did he have allies nearby to prevent that kind of thing?

Initiative order was something like this.

Orcs
Warlord
Cleric
Paladin

So he goes down on the Orcs' turn then one of the Leaders heals him. He stands up, Lays on Hands and hits an orc. Then the orcs swing and he goes down. This was under MM1 rules, but the Orcs kept critting.

Taking double hit points in one fight really does not seem that much to me. My groups routinely take a pounding.

I guess it is a different playstyle, but then again, my group uses non-standard 4E ruels, so some differences should be expected.
Eek! I thought 80 HP at 2nd level was a serious pounding, but maybe not?

By non-standard do you mean high damage monsters?

In a recent session the group busted into a room and had a major fight going. When the enemy counter-attack came in, the Warden stood in the doorway and stoned the entire line of enemies coming in. The Assassin stood behind him with a reach attack, the ranger stood behind the assassin, and the 3 of them beat the tar out every monster I threw at them. The warden took more than 200 hp (at 5th level) before the fight ended.

He felt pretty epic.

PS
Rock on :) There's something awesome about standing between your friends and (almost) certain eviscerating doom.

You almost sound like the guy in our group playing the un-missable Dwarf Fighter. The DM's dice must HATE him- despite having the highest AC, he is also among the most frequently hit...

I had a hybrid Paladin/Warlock in that boat. He often had huge defenses, but the DM like to roll a 19 on the die against him (and our DM rolls out in front of the screen). I finally traded him in because his "schtick" of having high defenses wasn't working at all.

I remember taking damage for almost 3 times my full-HP in one single round. Fortunately the character was a revenant and was insubstantial due to Shadow Form so it managed to stay alive at 2 HP above his negative bloodied value. I was scouting a little bit ahead of the rest of the party and due to a very bad roll on a peception check entered a room without noticing some hidden enemies....

Sounds like what happened to our Barbarian on Saturday. We were fighting some trolls and they surrounded the Barbarian, he kept getting critted by the DM and going down to bloodied which would give them another attack on a bloodied opponent, he'd drop down to less than 0 hit points, then the cleric would heal him up to almost full and the whole process would repeat itself again. Happened for about 4 rounds before we could get the situation under control and destroy the trolls with two wizards who specialized in fire.
