I killed one of my players...and they didn't get mad (possible Banewarrens spoilers)

I kill characters pretty regularly in my campaign. 'Course they're DEEP in Rappan Athuk 3, so they don't get mad - a bit frustrated at times, but not mad.

One thing - if the rogue was acrosss the cavern, why did the ranger shoot at him? Confusion makes you attack the nearest target - whether friend or foe.

Both the ranger and rogue were firing from a distance. Even though he was on the other side of the cavern when he ran, the rogue was still the closest creature to the ranger. But only by 5 feet!

The only times characters have died in my campaign have been due to stupid actions on their part, or horrible, horrible luck.

On the first case, the monk, Mr. "I move 100 feet per round" *charges* into a mass of Shambling Hulks, forgetting the clerics wear heavy armour and can, at best, only make it to the enounter this round and not act at all. He takes a full round of attacks from a group of monsters designed to stress the whole party. He survived the first round, but 2 of them had him in a squeeze-hold. He did not survive their next action.

The other death came when the party cleric, toe to to with a raging Ogre barbarian, takes 1 hit and a critical. Ogre rolls fantastic on all damage dice. Drops cleric to -23 or so.

That was the first death any of the Players had ever experienced. Everybody just stopped and stared at him, trying to recalculate the number I called out, and the number he had on his sheet. Then they asked me how much it's going to cost to bring him back. :)

I think my players consider me fair, and don't begrudge their deaths. It happens rarely because they're a good bunch and usually keep their heads about them.

We'll see. They're about to challenge a Dragon, and I have no intention to pull any punches, because I want this Dragon to be memorable. They half-jokingly hope that at least one character survives the final battle to drag the rest of the bodies back to the church for ressurection, but they realize it might very well come to that, or worse. :)

Joy. I love DM'ing.

Hey, we also had an incident with an Umber Hulk confusing our Ranger (are these guys somewhat easy to manipulate, or what?).

He wanted to kill our... fighter (not rogue, sorry), but we just dropped a darkness spell on him, so he was even more confused! :D

About character death... upon reaching 17th level (true resurrection) it becomes somewhat meaningless don't you think?

My character is one of the few (two to be precise) that haven't died yet (rolling 20's for saves at the most appropriate moments really helps)! And I don't really plan to change this... :)

Its a tough dungeon. Umber Hulks are brutal for their CR because
1. its a gaze attack so the people who get close to it have to save -before- they go. So if they're confused they act immeaditaly before anyone can react (often with truly unfortunate results).
2. Those people getting up close and personal (i.e. fighter types) often have poor will saves.
3. Most characters (not players) don't know umber hulks cause confusion. So they don't know to try to sheild their gaze.

Rules question/point:
If someone is confused they are confused just like the spell.... so you don't get another save you're just confused for the duration of the spell.
It was generous to give the Ranger a second save. But unnecessary.
