I know, I know, not another haste thread...

Hi all! I know that this topic has probably been beaten to death several times, but I've looked over some old pages and couldn't find a thread pertaining to the questions I had concerning haste. I hope you all forgive me for what I'm about to do...
There is some disagreement between my players and myself about haste and partial actions. I tend to think that the extra partial action is an extension of the round and not a minerature round inside a normal one... Now for an example, Killark (the resident dwarven fighter tank character) believes he should be able to take the partial action to perform a partial charge and power attack an X amount, then on his standard action stop power attacking and attack normally. Is this right? If this is right then what about the use of other feats (i.e. expertise in the partial action round only, and gain the AC benefits until his next round... what about rapid shot?). As you can see, a lot of the major feats can fall victim to this partial action nonsense... Please! Any advice would be greatly appreciated... especially from those of you who have experienced this problem and resolved it in your game. Thank you for your time.

Hey, welcome to the boards!

Nope, Killark is wrong. The partial action is an extension of the round. If you power attack in the partial action, you're still power attacking during the regular round, and vice versa.

Haste does NOT allow you to bend the rules of normal rounds. In the Power attack example, the PA would last throughout the round.

Haste doesn't give you extra 5ft steps, allow you to get around the limitations of charge, or anything else that is defined.

This is not really addressed anywhere in the core rules as far as I can tell. IMC we allow the use of Power Attack/Expertise on the full attack action, followed by a regular attack on the partial action or vice versa.

I guess it makes sense game-mechanics wise since the partial action is really separate. Though from a "real world" standpoint you are just moving faster and are thus able to perform more actions. From this perspective you could rule that you have to Expertise/Power Attack on everything or not at all.

Thanks Piratecat! It is an honor to be here. Thanks everyone for such a quick response... I new I was right :) Now I have to try and explain this to the rest of the group (or perhaps just show them this thread). Why is the DM always made out to be the bad guy? I can just hear my player's complaints now...

No balance issues, just a thought...

Would the extra action be gained in the same round of casting or in the following?

Same round.

Example:
PC: I move 20'. I cast Haste.
DM: Okay, Haste gives you a partial action.
PC: I use my wand of Lightning Bolt.

Just wanted to know, not sure that is ruled this way, seems like a house rule that we use and have no idea of it...

You know, until I saw this thread, I thought Power Attack and the modifier was per attack.

Now I have to figure out whether or not to actually use that rule when I play.
