I like Roles

Scribble

First Post
My name is Scribble (it's actually Jason... But do you find it weird when people tell you theirn real name on a message board too?) and I like roles.

I'm not sure why, but I was thinking about them, and wanted to post my reasons for discussion.

1. They help eliviate the "You wanna play what now?" moments when I DM.

I like new classes, both as a player, and as a DM. As a DM, however, they often meant I needed to take a good amount of time studying a class to see how it would impact the game, and even then sometimes the ony real way to know was to see it in action. I often didn't (and still don't) have the luxury to spend all that time on a new potential new class. And since I only have time really to run one campaign seeing it in action could have ver damaging effects.

While they don't tell me EVERYTHING about a new class, roles give me a pretty decent idea on how the new class operates. And since the game is now balanced based on roles (and gives advice on how lack of certain roles will impact the game) it's easy to see what will happen when a new class enters the mix.

I don't have to be as afraid when you want to play the new Warforged Ornithizer you rolled up...

2. They help eliviate the "Awww man... I have to play the _____?" moments.

Maybe your games were different, I dunno, but as I mainly DM, I've seen a good number of people end up playing a certain class because that's what the party needs, as opposed to a concept they imagined.

While roles don't eliminate the sometimes need for a new character to fullfill a certain function, they do help give the player a few more options to match his/her concept.

Instead of having to rethink your concept in order to play a needed class, you can find a class within the needed role that fits your concept pretty quickly.

So even though the party needs a healer, you can still play that bare chested bad tempered magic-hating athiest with a big sword. Just make him a martial leader of some type.

So those are two reasons I like roles... What do you think?

Two additional good things roles accomplish:

1. Every character can be expected to do something well. This was an issue in 3E with classes like Monk, Soulknife, and Hexblade that failed to do anything well. In addition, what your character does well is very easy to see, and hard to get wrong.

2. Having a definitive role makes game design easier for avoiding stepping on other character's toes. The Fighter had its role in 3E, but the Druid and Cleric could fill that role just as well(or in the Druid's case better) than the Fighter and be full spellcasters on top of that. Similar issues with Rogues and Wizards occurred where spells trumped skills.

I think that it makes for cookie cutter characters? I want to play a character rather than playing a role.

Thats cool. I think you can still play a character just as easily as you ever could. You can now get a little more of a glimpse (without studying it's abilities or seeing it in action) of what the new character can do, and how it will effect the game.

Like if I had a group consisting of a wizard, a cleric, a rogue, and a fighter, and then the fighter wanted to swap out for an incarnate... What will that do to my game?

Roles help me see that a bit more easily. (Or so I've noticed so far in my own campaign.)

Roles are for making it clear how you excel in combat. Roles have no importance regarding your ability to roleplay stuff outside of combat. Roles have existed since Gygax and Arneson created different character types with different hit dice progression.

The End.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. In my experience, this hasn't been the case at all. :)

In fact, 4E is the first time I really took a look at certain classes and said "Hey, those look like fun!" Usually, I just bounced on by and picked up a more "eccentric" class, i.e. Beguiler instead of Wizard/Sorc, Scout instead of Ranger, Ranger instead of Fighter, Hexblade instead of Fighter, Soulborn instead of Fighter...

Well, pretty much anything other than the Fighter. ;)
