Sigh. I work in IT, so I know how hard this is. But, this is the worst week (other than when they go live with the new DI) to have the forums down for maintanence for hours. I find this very ironic, and frankly, reinforces my belief that WotC isn't ready for a real DI at this point. Their forums went down and won't be back up until noon Pacific (I think that is the timing).

They announced this downtime long before we learned of the Dragon/Dungeon/Dragonlance things. And it was stated to restore the Search functions.

If I have to pay to access the WotC site/message boards, I will throw my toys out of the pram!
Well, you can announce things all you want, but if you are going to go to a major digital initiative, downtime of hours at a time won't be too popular.
Plus, this post was really about the irony of the timing, not about the actual downtime. Anyone that has worked in IT knows that this kind of thing happens all the time. We plan stuff, and then business makes some big announcement that realies on IT services, and we end up looking like we don't know what we are doing because we've brought stuff down at just the wrong moment.
That said, their forums are down for maintenance a lot. The return of search will be nice though.

The downtime is really annoying for those of us that live in Europe (I live in London, UK). It always goes down around 10:00am (my time) till about 11:00am, on a good day.

Given the way Search implodes whenever they try to implement it I don't expect this time to be any different.
The WoTC boards are just too large and disorganized for most search functions to handle. But the frequency with which it goes down for maintenance would be a huge handicap for any site attempting to promote a subscription service.
