I Miss Boxed Sets

Mortaneus

First Post
With the proliferation of digital color printing, there's some really nice looking books hitting the shelves nowadays. Hardcovers, full color, gloss pages....

Still, I don't think they compare to the old boxed sets. I want a big sealed box with a bunch of books, maps, dice, counters, posters, and even quality feedback cards! I want the feeling of cracking open a treasure-trove of campaign material for the first time, sifting through it, setting some items aside to examine later, and digging into the really cool looking ones immediately!

Dark Sun, Planescape, Ravenloft, Karameikos, Greyhawk.....sure, second edition was crap, but it had such cool boxed sets!

I think the problem with a box set is that the box costs a bit more money compared to a book. But yes, the advantage is that you could include a lot of goodies in it that could enrich the game. I suppose you can produce a "web enhanced" version that includes the goodies as a download. Even so, it's kinda interesting that aside from Chainmail, 3E has not generated ANYTHING in a box in the three years it's been around. Perhaps the time is right.

Oh yeah, I sure do miss the big deluxe boxed adventures like Dragon Mountain & Night Below too. The pre-made battlemaps like those included in the First Quest boxed are nice too. And one can't have too many full color wall maps.

Imagine how nice they would be with 3rd Ed rules...the counters, battlemap, booklets, player handouts, etc. all there and ready-to-run.

I hope one of these days we'll see the return of the boxed set...maybe not for rule books, but maybe for super adventures and campaign expansions. One can hope.

my favorite boxed sets...

Night Below
Return To The Tomb Of Horrors
Rod Of Seven Parts
Menzoberranzan

Great stuff of old.

*** almost forgot Dragon Mountain which was a blast. :)

The Adventure Game box set is... uh... a box set.

I agree, we need more box sets. I didn't play 2e, and I regret missing out on those big troves of material. As mentioned above, opening it, sifting through... buying RttToEE in just a book felt kinda flat.

I'm thinking $25-30 US. I think one of mine (maybe Planescape?) was nearing 40 but I think $25 was about the average, IIRC....
