40 points 1-1 starting at all 8s? Or 40 points 1-1 total?

I think it's safe to assume that the latter is out of question. An average of 6~7 in attributes simply doesn't sound right. ;)

As for the initial question, I would not make a blaster, there are two arcane casters already.

Instead, I would make a Barbarian|Druid.

Warlock/Psion

Both, however tend to have shorter ranges than wizards do but there are advantages too.

Take Devil's Sight least invocation (see normally in darkness and magical darkness) Combine that with Hungry Darknes (least invocation) and you can get close engough to do damage.

Without getting too cheesy... :p

Of those suggested so far, I have to agree with the Warblade | Psion (kineticist) proposal.

~~~
However, here is my proposal (psionics haters, prepare to cringe!).
Human (good default) Psion 13 | Wilder 13 (no Psionic PrCs I really like)
40pts 1 for 1: Str 8, Dex 16, Con 14 Int 18, Wis 14, Cha 18
Stats after increases & Magic items (assuming a conservative +4 to Int and Cha):
Str: 8, Dex: 16, Con: 14, Int: 25, Wis: 14, Cha: 22
HP: 74 (averaged) + 85 (see Wild Surge 4 augmented Vigor)
Power Points: 378..?
BA: 9/4
Fort: 6 + magic items
Ref: 7 + magic items
Will: 10 + magic items
Powers Known
Psion (25)~ (be creative)
6th: 2 more
5th: Energy Current, Fiery Discorporation, 2 more
4th: Energy Ball, 3 more
3rd: Energy Cone, 3 more
2nd: Damp Power (complete Psi), Energy Missile, 2 more
1st: Mind Thrust, Energy Ray, 3 more
Wilder (7)~ note: since Wild Surge can be used for your Psion Powers, and you have a higher Save DC with those powers, use Wilder for all utility powers. Such as...
6th: Contingency, 5th: Plane Shift, 4th: D-Door, 3rd: Psionic Dispel, 2nd: Share Pain, 1st: Empty Mind, Vigor
Feats~ (I don't have Complete Psi with me, I'll update this later.)
~~~

Important: Wild Surge 4 Vigor + Share Pain + Psy Crystal = DM would have to go out of his way to hurt you.

~~~
Sample Blasting: Privileged Energy (feat) + Empower Power (feat) + ??? (feat from Complete Psi... Metapower-something?) + augmented Energy (fire) Ball + Wild Surge 4 = 17d6 + 34 x1.5...
I don't think blaster's work real well here....
Crusader/Marshal. Done right you will be the buffer of all buffers.
I'd totally agree with this one at least with Marshal, as Im not familiar with Crusader part. 4 Member party and so many levels makes moving around harder if you want to pull out something. Extra moves from marshal will be really handy. And all those auras. If you want caster type go for sorc/marshal. Or bard/marshal but thats not blaster.
Everyone will get spells through easily with that boost to resistance check. And you'll about always act first with motivate dexteritys +init. From major auras well they suck compared to minor's, just get ones you find interesting.
Fighter/Sorcerer.
Take the "Armored Mage" alternative class feature from CM, take Battle Caster & Medium Armor Prof. feats (to cast in mithral full plate without ASFC) and go to town.
Two levels of Paladin could take care for the Armor Proficiency and offer Divine Grace for your Sorcerer's great Cha bonus to all saves. Too bad you'd have to be a LG do-gooder.
Abjurant Champion (CM) should allow for an auto-extended Shield spell that can be cast as a swift action & grants a +9 AC bonus. (or a swift Dispel Magic, if need arises). Throw in Argent Savant and boost it to +11.
Shield Ward (PHB II) doesn't say you have to actually carry a shield, it only lets you apply your shield bonus to touch AC and against all those nasty things like Trip, Bull Rush et. al.
Since you will be wielding a Greatsword or something along these lines, Somatic Weaponry (CM) might be in order as well. Later on, you could possibly invest in some Combat Focus feats to grab fast healing 4 , +4 to Will saves and another +8 vs. all Disarm/Bull Rush/Trip et. al. for 12 rounds per encounter (+19 to defenses vs. Trip et. al. with your Shield spell up).
Thus, your physical protection should be more or less secured (providing a Dex 16, you'd be only one swift action away from an AC 30 (touch 22)- without ANY enhancements/feats/whatever counted in) - so you could concentrate on blasting spells with impunity, while your fighter bonus feats would probably further increase your melee presence to something quite valuable.
Well, just a few thoughts.
I have absolutely no experience with gestalt build (and 60-points-buy equivalent characters ;) ), so this may well be total crap - don't bite me for voicing it.
Wizard/Psion... and don't miss the spell from XPH that allows you to charge your psionics with magic. Even with a great point buy, it's nice to have a single primary stat, and both use intelligence.
