I need a new (PC) game. Recommendations?

I need a new game. I've been sort of jonesing for a good Space flight sim. Sort of like Wing Commander redone. Anything good out there? I haven't heard of anything.

Barring that, I'm always up for a good RPG. No, I'm not looking for an MMORPG. Oh, sure, I'm sure I'd love WoW or even LoTRO but I'm just not sure my wife would be too happy with either game. And I don't want to shell out for a monthly fee for anything.

Any suggestions?

Sadly, the Space Sim genre is mostly dead these days. Which is complete crap, if you ask me. I still have X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and a few others of the classics that I play all the time and dream of new ones that are as good. Best bet I'd suggest is Freespace 2, which isn't new, but its definitely good. And if you're a Battlestar Galactica fan, try hunting down Beyond the Red Line on the net...its a BSG mod for Freespace 2 that requires nothing but the mod itself(not even Freespace).

On the RPG end...Oblivion's the first thing that comes to mind to me. Maybe Jade Empire or either of the KoTOR games if you don't have an X-Box and never played them.

That's the second suggestion for Freespace 2. I might have to check that out.
Its definitely a good game. Thing about it is it was pretty much the last of the Space Sim genre, so it has all the improvements and such that developed over the years. Now if only we could get more. :(

Yeah, FreeSpace 2 (the first one isn't bad either) is the space game you want. I wish there were more space games out there. I didn't like the BSG mod though. The weapon damage just wasn't that nasty, so it took lots of sustained fire to kill things - pretty much like the beginning of the freespace games when you have 2 sucky guns. I like the fighting better once you get some harder hitting guns and bigger weapon banks.

There's a "free" MMORPG - Guildwars. You can find a 10-hour demo CD-ROM at Gamestop for either one or two dollars. The first two editions are $30 and don't charge monthly fees.

Update - I installed GuildWars demo disk this weekend and played it for a couple of hours.

You get one class and can cross-train with a second. Classes include warrior, ranger, monk, elementalist, and another mage or two.

So far the missions are pretty standard - go kill things and bring x back to me. And after you do that go wash the dishes!

I loved it when I got knocked off the network. I'm in the middle of battling a scorpion-thingy and then all of a sudden we're just standing next to each other doing nothing at all. It's like we both heard pretty music in the distance and forgot what we were fighting about. :p

Sams has a pack with all three Guild Wars games for $50.

Here's another vote for Freespace 2.

It's (legally) free, it's modding community has made some amazing improvements to the game's engine --I've played the original retail version, and let me tell you, it's much, much prettier now-- and to top it off, there are Babylon 5 and (new) Battlestar Galatica conversions for it.

Hmm. On the RPG front, I think NWN2 and Titan Quest are probably the best of the most recent releases. The former did an awesome job of creating an immersive, D&D experience, while the latter is just about the best hack-and-slash I've ever played.

Space sim wise, the posters are right that there isnt' really much new in the genre these days that's worth shouting about. The last game I played that was worth it's salt on this front, is Privateer Remake, which as the name suggests, it a remake of the original Privateer, as a full-3d mod for the open source game Vega Strike.
