I need advice for a new Sentinel Druid.

Er -- Do you know why the wizard's taking this tack?

Is he using ranged attacks with a to-hit roll? (in which case, why is he a wizard, but also it does make sense not to attack a baddie while you've got a -2 to hit).

Is he under the impression that burst/blasts have a penalty against prone targets?

Is he just upset that you're playing single-target controller?

He's a stick in the mud, I let him know that bursts and blasts don't have the -2, and he kept saying "but they hurt you too..", and I said "not if you aim them properly.".. to which he didn't have a reply.. a few minutes later he was like "You won't always be able to hit things with melee.."

I think he's just being troublesome. He always wants to play mages/wizards/magic users.. he hates melee..

It's just driving me bonkers.

I don't care about what he does anymore.

Edit: Yay, 200th post.

So rather than make a new thread about the question I'm going to ask, I figured I'd ask it here:

Does anyone here have any advice on where I should put my bear?

Behind me or in front of me?

The wizard is being absurdly stupid. Prone opponents grant combat advantage. So the -2 to hit with ranged evens out to -0 (or +2 with area attacks).

You can also inform the wizard that with staff expertise, you are effectively nullifying an enemie's actions. If you prone them and are one square away(with a reach 2 due to the staff melee attack) the mob spends one action getting up, and one to get next to you. he can't charge, and unless he crawls to an adjacent square it won't be able to attack you. Also suggest the rogue take escape artist's trick(if he's a thief that is). He could shift in 1 square make an attack with CA, then shift out a square. Effectively leaving plent of room for the wizard to hit the mob with a burst 1 power, and not hitting any of you.

Incorrect, as has already been pointed out upthread.

From the compendium:
Prone: When a creature is prone, it is lying down... it grants combat advantage to enemies making melee attacks against it, but it gains a +2 bonus to all defenses against ranged attacks from enemies that aren’t adjacent to it.

The wizard will be at -2 to hit if he uses ranged powers againt the prone target.

To be honest, there seems to be an odd tone to this thread a la "Both powers are good, but take X and screw the 2 other party members who it will inconvenience..."

Many 4e powers are only as good as the manner in which they interract with the rest of the party. Knocking targets prone when at least 2 of the PCs seem to be ranged-based strikes me as more than a little selfish/silly.

Neither of which is their strong suit, and they can take a feat to negate the weakness if they're really stubborn about it. Vexing Overgrowth is contradictory to the strong points of a Summer Sentinel.

Edit: Minifig, something else to point out to the Wizard since he seems to be missing a lot of details on how his mechanics work...a lot of his bursts and blasts say "Enemies within the burst" which means it doesn't matter who's in the area, it won't hit the party. You're definitely right about careful aim though, and he can take War Wizardry to help alleviate the issue as well.

As for your bear, I always bring it up to the line so it can buff the defender and other strikers who have to be on top of the BBEG to hit it. They also use it as a flanking buddy which is super nice, and it still gives you access to opportunity actions :)
