ok my buddies and i just started a new campeign...well a few weeks ago actually...i'm trying to play a wizard who can hold his own in melee. right now he's a level 2 wizard and level 1 fighter. right now he's lacking in everything...poor spell selection and poor attack/dmg...what would be a good rroute to go for 3e...i'm looking to include some bladesinger but its not necessary if i can be stronger without out it....

well, a wizard/fighter is going to be lacking at the early levels. What do you have so far and what are your goals? Gaining an additional level iun Wizard gives you access to the buff spells like bull strength etc, that can help out a lot.

I am unsure what you are looking for here. I would suggest that you take a level of ranger instead of that level of fighter.. or even better just stay straight mage and pick up spells all over the place to get you where you want to be. Still though, I think that the level of ranger would help more than the fighter.

If you are stuck with past choices (and it isnt a horrible choice, just not one I would've done ;) ) then pick up another level of fighter now and then, grab eldritch knight or something like that, and keep grabbing spells which up your personal combat potential.

A wizard / Fighter is a bit of a hard one to play at low-levels. Even so, there are some basic things you could do...

True Strike, Shield and Mage Armor are always nice to have around.
Magic Weapon isn't bad either, even if it only gives that +1 bonus.

Other than that I would suggest sticking to a more traditional Wizard style of buffing your friends and using Enchantment & Necromancy school spells on your enemies. Once you have 5 levels of Wizard and 4 levels of fighter you have a fairly balanced set of combat skills and spells, and those close-combat encounters aren't so bad anymore. I suggest concentrating on two, maybe three, schools of magic. You can occasionally take something very useful outside of these schools, but sticking to a specific area gives you a better fighter / wizard.

The other option is going for the Fighter levels at this point. You can do a nice bit of damage once you get Weapon Specialization and add it to some buffs. Like mentioned above: you probably want 1 more level of wizard first, whatever you do. After that it's your decision:

  • Figther with a few aces up your sleeve
  • Wizard with some experience with close-combat
  • An archer with a range of nasty surprises

Those are basically your options. At the moment one of my players is at Wizard 4 / Fighter 2, and he is still struggling with the concept. He has a nice array of defensive spells and feats, but the offensive side is still somewhat lacking. I would imagine that his character will become truly powerful around lvl 10, when he has Wizard 6 / Fighter 4, and that's what he is aiming at.

Also: if you can get your hands on a Mage Blade it is a must have for a Wizard / Fighter. The enchantment gives a +1 attack bonus / 2 levels of arcane caster you have, and it comes with a +X blade, so it's a very nice sword :).

ok here is what i'm thinking...5wizard/1fighter/1duelist/7eldritchknight/6bladesinger by level 20 and is the moonblade a longsword?

or maybe taking off the level of duelist for another level of bladesinger....

Phh...good luck with that...
As for a "moonblade", I don't know. Basically, though, if you have a specific kind of a enchantment on a blade there's no reason why you couldnt' find it on another kind of a blade. Mage Blade for example is a longsword by default, but it can appear on different kinds of blades.

Go the Eldritch Knight route. Take only one level of fighter, 5 levels of wizards, and you're set.

ELDRITCH KNIGHT

Hit Die: d6.
Requirements:
To qualify to become an eldritch knight, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Weapon Proficiency: Must be proficient with all martial weapons.
Spells: Able to cast 3rd-level arcane spells.
Class Skills
The eldritch knight’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int), Jump (Str), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Knowledge (nobility and royalty) (Int), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), and Swim (Str).
Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier.

It's in the DM's Guide. 10 level PrC. At levels 2 through 10, you also advance in your wizards spells, and you gain BAB as a fighter.

i think my plan is a good one...i get 2x my intel modifier to my ac...i get up to level 6 spells, i get 4 attacks, if i get the moonblade then thats another 2 caster levels so that gives me access to 7th level spells, and doing this all with no armor and one weapon...i think thats pretty good...

Personally I think your plan should be how to get to 4th level without dying, but that's just me ;)
