I think "Illegal in California" might be interesting, but you live in England, so it's like mine being "I'd be hanged in Shropshire." Or something. Like I'd know anything about the gallows in England. I'd go for the "...in a hat" one.

Shropshire is a county in England. The three things Americans know best from there are probably 1. The Shropshire Regiment was responsible for the burning of the White House in the War of 1812, 2. Charles Darwin came from there, and 3. The British supergroup (and yet, one-hit-wonder in the U.S., darn it all ) T'Pau, best known for their 1987 hit "Heart and Soul" (top position in U.S. charts #4, #27 for the year, sample lyrics: "Give a little bit of Heart and Soul. Give a little bit of love to grow. Give a little bit of Heart and Soul and don't you make me beg for more. Give a sign I need to know, a little bit of Heart and Soul.") came from Shrewsbury, the county seat of Shropshire.

Obscure... how's this: I'm very tired, and was thinking about my post about T'Pau, above, while looking at Ferret's avatar, and it suddenly occurred to me how much he looks like Tom Petty from the video for "Don't Come Around Here No More." So try this title:
