I believe it was in one of Mel Brooke's films (perhaps High Anxiety ) that noted that the loudest, most annoying people are often the most ignored and left alone people in the world simply because sane people do not want to have anything to do with them. The DM could simply have people ignore, underestimate, avoid, and/or just block Madias out of their memories simply because he is so ridiculously annoying and blatant about his occupation, which real no thief/rogue in his right mind would be. Thus they might discount him as just a poser as best. You might suggest to the player to have his character max out his bluff skill and take advantage of these assumptions.
Or you could whack the player with a blunt instrument, preferably one that is damaging and heavy, until you knock some sense into him. This might be easier than my first suggestion
