I Need Staying Power

AC 23 at level 3 is astronomical. The character pretty much has to be focused on AC to obtain such a value. I personally frown upon that approach, but that's neither here nor there. As for Improved Toughness, it's an excellent feat. It basically gives you a +2 on Con for the purposes of hit points. Fighters get lots of feats, so this one might be worth it. The fighter in my group picked up all the saving throw boosters, particularly Iron Will, but that may have been due to the campaign.

Guess a polearm fighter wouldn't be your alley? Good offense beats most good defenses.

Friend of mine had a bbn1/bard5 with strength 18 and con 10... nearly no hitpoints but 1d10+18 as his favorite Power Attack routine. And he still hit pretty well. Put that guy next or behind the well armored cleric.

And you can still go the Improved Trip monkey route.

What are your stats?

If you have a good dex then the 'Champion of Correlon' in the 'Races of the Wild' would be a good way to go. That PrC allows you to wear full plate armor and still get the most out of your dexterity.

Ysgarran.

So what are your full stats?

This is kinda what I'm picturing. (10) Str 16, (2) Dex 12, (4) Con 10, (4) Int 12, (2) Wis 10, (6) Cha 14

If so, you're one of the rare point-buy fighters who doesn't dump his mental stats. Your DM should reward you for that :P

If I was close to the mark, consider this: (6) Str: 14, (4) Dex: 12, (8) Con: 13, (4) Int: 12, (2) Wis: 10, (6) Cha: 14

At lvl 4 (and 8, 12, 16, 20 for that matter) raise your Con. Take Improved Toughness at level 6 or level 9.

Hope this helps.

Nobody's mentioned your saving throws yet, so thought I'd chime in with my opinions. With the wealth of fighter feats, you can spare some other feats for Lightning Reflexes and Iron Will. Guess Great Fortitude wouldn't be too bad either since you're low on Con. I don't think you hit points will be a bad problem, just have to step out of combat slightly more frequently for healing. Having those two bad saving throws on the other hand....

If you want to be a tank type, and feel the need for CHA (maybe a lot of interpersonal skills in the history??) why don't you go with Paladin? You can put that CHA to good use, get as many HP as a fighter, and you get Diplomacy as a skill (if indeed there is a lot of interpersonal stuff in your history).

Any reason you have to take fighter?

If not Paladin, how about Warlock? Cleric? Fighter/Sorceror? Dare I even say it... no... I can't... BUT I MUST... BARD ! (Sorry, I'd hate to inflict Bard on anyone)

I worry about hitpoints because anything powerful enough to hit such a high AC is going to do enough damage to make it hurt

Belbarid- weapon finesse takes penalties when using a shield, but CombatExpertise and Fighting Defensivly sounds good

Ysgarran- Champion of Corellon looks good, i'll bounce the idea off my DM, thanks

Drowbane- my stats will be: (6) Str: 14, (6) Dex: 16, (4) Con: 10, (6) Int: 14, (2) Wis: 10, (4) Cha: 12. Originally, i had Int and Cha reversed, but then i remembered CE's 13 Int requirment

Emongnome- all my saves could use help: fighter good fort is decent, 16 dex helps refl, and i'm counting on all will saves to be enchantment effects so being an elf adds +2 *crosses fingers*, maybe i could make room for Iron Will

Tatsukun- i don't have to be a fighter... but its the closest choice. I looked at Paladin for a long time, but the character is a little too carefree to be bound by Lawful Good/Paladin Code. I looked at Fighter/Cleric or Favored Soul but decided against (even though you gain so much for so little lost)
As a fighter, most of my skills are cross class... GatherInfo, Bluff, Diplomacy, Knowledge(Religion), Carpentry. He's supposed to be social and likable

Thanks the the feedback everyone,
I'll keep the AC high, look for +Con items, and that Cloak
any ideas for surviving area damage spells? feats or something? Dive for Cover?

Well, if he's care free, talk to your DM about a Chaotic Good Paladin (There are lots of versions the most recent I remember is in Unearthed Arcana).

Or, why not start out a Rogue, then go paladin? Get lots of skills, and use your Cha.

I don't have anything against the fighter, I'm just talking options. It also sounds like this guy is a good candidate for the Human Paragon Class at first level (also in UA). You get to choose your skills, and one of them stays a class skill for ever. That's cool.

I second Darklone, use a polearm with reach. With your combat reflexes you can have up to 4 AoOs a round. As soon as you have improved trip this provides you with the option of tripping any charging opponents and having a free blow on any who fell, while he is prone as follow-up attack. In your next action, you attack one (still prone) and move away. Repeat. This way you hit nearly every time and get hit rarely.

As soon as you gain spring attack you are very hard to melee for anyone not having reach.

For area attacks - why not take two lvl of rogue or a lvl of monk? Rogue also provides skill points and sneak damage.
