I need to destroy my own weapon...

First Post
In my multi-DM campaign (we each take turns DMing, I'm the main DM overall though) we've come across a small problem...
The DM for the next session spoke with me and he had come up with an interesting plot (which he didn't divulge much of), which requires my character's weapon be destroyed or unusable, so that he may pick up a new weapon at the end of the game. The weapon my character has is not particularly powerful (+2 glassteel rapier), but it has immense sentimental value to my character. Additionally, the rapier doesn't need to be permanently out of commission, just for a day or so.

I'm not sure how we should do it. The blade is one of the last remnants to his past life and he would not give it up easily. We were thinking of simply having some creature sunder it during combat (the game will be a dungeon crawl), but we have no idea what kind of creature is particularly good at such a thing. Anyway, I'd love to hear some suggestions on either what creature would be a good choice, or some completely (and less cheesy, lol) way of handling this. Thanks guys!

Well... if it is OK to get the item back later on, have it be stolen by some of the denizens hiding in the dungeon you're going into, but have it be hidden in such a manner / place that it won't be recovered until the adventure (i.e. the challanges) are essentially over...

Make sure the stealing makes sense though, and that other things get stolen (i.e. from other PC's) as well.... maybe the BBEG/M of the dungeon has an etherial filcher as a pet???

What about having it stolen, rather than destroyed? That way, the DM can return it whenever he wants rather easily, or set up an adventure to recover it. A monster such as an ethereal filcher could steal pretty much any item with ease.

edit: *grumble* whisper beat me...

A creature good for sundering is an Earth elemental. We had one come after our party once with the order to destroy as many weapons as possible. They can be very nasty.

You could go the alternate route of an earth creature; elemental, zorn, etc, Take the weapon since it is a glassteeled rapier it may still be techincally of the earth. Have them just phase up from the ground and steal it away. Maybe it resonates in some way that attracts them. You could also have an etheral filcher (or whatever they are called) steal it.

Hope it helps

The "walls are closing and the only way to keep us from being killed/trapped inside this dungeon is my magic sword jamming the mechanism!" trick could work. If this weapon is of sentimental value to your character then its best to have some heroic and clearly sacrificial moment you can ham up a bit. Like the cyclops in Krull, only its a +2 glasteel rapier, and not a cyclops. ^_^

Best would be if it was a dungeon or danger from his past life. If you want to take this as a cathartic event, leaving behind the last remnant of your past life while facing its dangers is good thematically.

destroyed

Greater and elder Earth elementals and all blackguards have the improved sunder feat.

Stolen

Telekinesis spell one attempt a round for a ranged disarm.

Combat Maneuver: Alternatively, once per round, you can use telekinesis to perform a bull rush, disarm, grapple (including pin), or trip. Resolve these attempts as normal, except that they don’t provoke attacks of opportunity, you use your caster level in place of your base attack bonus (for disarm and grapple), you use your Intelligence modifier (if a wizard) or Charisma modifier (if a sorcerer) in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier, and a failed attempt doesn’t allow a reactive attempt by the target (such as for disarm or trip). No save is allowed against these attempts, but spell resistance applies normally. This version of the spell can last 1 round per caster level, but it ends if you cease concentration.

Only problem with theft is that the character would probably stop at nothing to get the blade back. He'd halt pretty much everything and do whatever it took to get it. I really do like the Ethereal Filcher idea though, hehe.

Broken would be more poetic and fitting I think. The character is an outcast Avariel (his wings were cut off for betraying his people to dragons), and perhaps getting the weapon repaired might be something he can only do in his homeland (Aerie of the Snow Eagles, for you realms fan). Anyway, the earth elemental idea is good (dragon might be a bit too tough, hehe), or a golem perhaps. I do agree that it probably needs to be hammed up a bit and have it be done in some extremely dramatic fashion... just need to think of one that fits.

P.S.: No, I had no idea about the Baldur's Gate game NPC. Beleive it or not, I thought it was an orginal idea :P.

Does glass-steel mean it's like glass? What if it has some kind of effect cast/imposed on it that makes it vibrate at a very high frequency, which will make the wielder's teeth hurt and shiver and his eyes water?

Removing the effect takes time and/or research (possibly because no one can stand being near the weapon for long) - so, the rapier will be out of commission for as long as you need it be for story reasons, with no quest necessary for your PC to retrieve it. :)

The vibration might be started by some kind of sonic attack, and be or seem a freak occurrence that no one knows how to deal with at first.
